Remember that NPC uses the quota system. It is a little misleading that it is called a "bid list" because not everyone on the list will necessarily get a bid from that chapter.

Let's say 100 PNMs attend a pref. They are then ranked 1-100. How this comes to be is private, but suffice it to say that there is an order. If panhellenic sets quota at 40, then if the top 40 people on the list all rank the chapter first, then only those 40 will get bids. This very rarely happens. Most chapters go further down their list, but typically not all the way to the bottom.

Therefore, if a PNM is ranked last, the odds are very slim that she will get a bid. The only way that she would get a bid is if (in the example above) 39 or fewer PNMs have matched with that chapter and it went all the way down the list.

This is why chapters must be very careful about who they invite to prefs. In the OP case, she did not make her very rude comment until pref... so the chapter probably got blindsided. As BG said, their hands were tied. Who knows where she fell on their list, but I would suspect that they would try to make it as low as possible.

Does that help?
Yes, that makes lots of sense! Thanks for that breakdown, even if it has been explained on here before. It's quite logical how it matches up. Is it explained that way to PNMs?

It depends on the campus, but in most cases, yes, and in the cases where it's not, it should be! That's why PNMs are bound to whatever chapter they're bid by if that chapter is on their preference card - they are, in effect, pre-signing their bid.

ah - now i get it when you guys say "dont rank a house you absolutely wouldnt take a bid from." because if you put it down, even as absolute last, its almost as if you put it at the top. i surely hope its explained as simply as this, because it makes perfect sense. i know its a long week and the PNMs are young so it may go over their head, but i dont think it gets any simpler.

then i guess it gets sticky in the whole "being affiliated no matter what vs. not going greek at all" mess.

now tell me this. when a PNM is superawesome and would be a great addition to any house, i'd think shed be ranked on many houses' lists. I imagine this is how a PNM would get their least favorite house--the "top" houses would max out (ie. more PNMs ranked them #1 than quota allows) and each house after that would be maxed out until the PNM got to a house that had a spot. now whether she wants to be there (or the house wants her there) doesn't matter because this is how the matching works. so girls shouldnt take it personal that they got a bid to ABC house, one that the PNM didnt care too much for.

(im rambling and keeping the thread moving until we get an update)
