I thought she made the comment (about wanting to be a Serena) at Prefs? If so, it isn't as if Marissa necessarily "gave her a bid." They could have put her dead last on their list. If she was at a pref party, she has to be on the list somewhere. I think aprocess said they weren't a strong chapter (and Serena was), so it is foreseeable that Marissa could get down to the bottom of their list before hitting quota - even if they no longer wanted her.

Exactly.
Which is part of why what she said was so inappropriate and rude.
I really think that any self-respecting chapter WOULDN'T call a PNM who refused a bid after what she said at pref night. Even if they really, really, really, really wanted her before.

but umm... what self-respecting chapter gives a bid to a girl after she says something like that at pref night? she shouldn't have been on their list at all if that's the case.
its like a guy asking a girl out, she says no, and then the guy goes off about how he never wanted to date her anyway. WTF, just because you didnt get what you wanted out of the deal?

You're not in an NPC are you? No biggie but that could be the cause of your misunderstanding.
Marissa's hands were tied. NPC regulations state that if a woman is invited back to preference night, she MUST appear somewhere on that chapter's bid list. Even if it is dead last.
AFAIK there is NO way to get out of this situation. Unless maybe a PNM murdered someone in the house on preference night or something. Which clearly didn't happen. LOL.

I am in NPHC, so yes, I'm sure I'm misunderstanding the situation from an NPC rules/rush standpoint.
Thanks for the explanation. So pref night, more or less, is like a 99.99% yes from the actives side, but still elusive from the PNM side. Its like your bid list before pref night would be a list of PNMs to vote yes on, and then after pref night, it's a matter of reordering the deck from "absolutely positively YES" to "meh, she's OK, well welcome Polly PNM if she shows up."
This is my interpretation as an outsider, and i understand if i've asked too much.

^^^ sort of.
Remember that NPC uses the quota system. It is a little misleading that it is called a "bid list" because not everyone on the list will necessarily get a bid from that chapter.
Let's say 100 PNMs attend a pref. They are then ranked 1-100. How this comes to be is private, but suffice it to say that there is an order. If panhellenic sets quota at 40, then if the top 40 people on the list all rank the chapter first, then only those 40 will get bids. This very rarely happens. Most chapters go further down their list, but typically not all the way to the bottom.
Therefore, if a PNM is ranked last, the odds are very slim that she will get a bid. The only way that she would get a bid is if (in the example above) 39 or fewer PNMs have matched with that chapter and it went all the way down the list.
This is why chapters must be very careful about who they invite to prefs. In the OP case, she did not make her very rude comment until pref... so the chapter probably got blindsided. As BG said, their hands were tied. Who knows where she fell on their list, but I would suspect that they would try to make it as low as possible.
Does that help?

Yes, that makes lots of sense! Thanks for that breakdown, even if it has been explained on here before. It's quite logical how it matches up. Is it explained that way to PNMs?
