He made the WSJ, btw. I read an article that said he was going to lose his license to practice law, too. Is that still part of the deal?

Yes, he's officially convicted of a felony which automatically disbars him in Michigan (assuming that's true everywhere? I'm sure our law student GCers will chime in).
The police chief has retired effective immediately.
Christine Beatty has not accepted a plea deal.

That's what I said during his resignation speach.
She will then write a book which will turn into a Lifetime Original movie, named Carlita's Way, ala "Carlito's Way". Lol seriously wouldn't you laugh?
I'm sure Christine Beatty will let EVERYTHING out now.

It's got to be a brighter day for you, AGDee. I got the impression that this scandal was bothering you a lot. (It would bother me too.)

The City Attorney, Sharon McPhail resigned as well. I understand the City President, Ken Cockrel, Jr. will be sworn as the next mayor....a HOT MESS, but I really feel sorry for the citizens of Detroit....everything is up in the air, and the entire sorted mess is not over. The Feds are probably still going to investigate what happened with the death of the dancer, and the sludge contract with "Synergy" including allegations of kickbacks to some City Council members. It will be "on and poppin" for many months to come in the "Big D". Plus, Christine Beatty has lost her "bargaining chip" to work out her own "deal" since the "big fish" has pled out. Her case was continued to 9/11/08.

Well, and the downside of Ken Cockrel, Jr. becoming the Mayor is that Monica Conyers is next in line as President of the City Council. She is married to John Conyers who is a very popular long time Congressman, which is how she got elected. But she is a HOT MESS herself. The police were called to her hotel in Denver during the DNC because she was making a huge scene about her room not being good enough.
Sharon McPhail resigning is no surprise. She has been a huge supporter of his for a long time now. There will be more resignations/retirements, I'm sure.
UGAalum: My biggest frustration is that I have to pay income taxes to the City of Detroit because I work in the city. However, I have no say in any city politics. It feels much like taxation without representation. I have been trying to find actual numbers, but I highly suspect that the non-resident workers in Detroit actually pay a larger proportion of the total city budget than the residents, even though we pay 1.5% and residents in Detroit pay 3%. The people who pay that 1.5% include the CEO and execs of General Motors, CompuWare, Illitch Holdings (owners of Red Wings, Tigers, Little Ceasar's), etc.
There is a part of me that feels sorry for Christine Beatty. She did the same crime but has suffered and will continue to suffer so much more. I know she is responsible for her actions, but I think she thought he would help her and he has totally abandoned her. Ladies, don't risk everything for a man, any man, ever. That's a lesson to be learned there.
(FYI: It's Synagro with the sludge contract)

(correcting myself) I saw in the Free Press that Christine Beatty is hoping for a plea deal for next week despite Kwame's plea. She has 7 felony counts of her own.
While it definitely takes two to tango, it always seems that the woman in the affair takes the harder "hit" when its all said and done. Beatty left her husband, quit her job due to the revelation of the affair, may lose her opportunity to take the bar exam (character and fitness problems) and looks like a dummy since Kwame did not leave his wife. When it was all said and done and she was left her twisting in the breeze. Hopefully, she will serve minimal jail time and try to re-build her life. In the latest pictures, she looks like she's aged 100 years
Updates for today: (from the Free Press)
All Kwame appointees will lose their jobs effective September 18
Detroit Zoo removes Kwame's name from their water tank
Detroit must hold a special election in 2009 for mayoral seat.

I think that's the way it is in most states; bar organizations won't hesitate to disbar you after a conviction, and some will disbar you even if you aren't convicted.
