Sisters who can't recruit

Some people just aren't cut out for recruiting and will do anything to get out of it.

Take me, for example... I can't formal rush for shit. Hate it with a fucking passion. It drains me. I don't have tact-- I just say it. And, if a girl is being a little bitch, I can't take it. I actually asked a girl one time, "Do you have a problem?" when she kept being bitchy and not wanting to talk. (She was a multiple legacy to another chapter that ended up cutting her...)

I would rather be the one handing out the food and watching pnm's reactions/body movements in response to skits/conversations, etc.

Now, COB? I rock the house. I personally brought around 10 girls in one semester who were given a bid. But, I knew those girls. That's just my style.

But, if you're asking about putting people out-of-sight? I've never seen it happen with my sorority. Even us behind-the-scenes people were watching/listening/out there.

I agree with Tippie.

For what it's worth, the WORST girl in my sorority (stealing people's stuff, taking other sisters' identities) was one of the best rushers.

It's like many other skills - you can usually achieve a certain competence with work, but some people are just gifted, and able to do it well with relative ease.
I think a successful sorority knows to utilize the many different talents and gifts of its members - let those who can recruit well shine doing that, and let others (like Tippie in formal rush) work in support roles.

In my opinion...

Recruitment is about making connections and conversation...

I have personally had members who were not great with conversation and often those members requested to serve recruitment in other fashions such as serving drinks or floating to leave the women who were great at having conversation with PNMs...

As far as dress, most recruitment chairs set a standard for dress code for events for Formal Recruitment and CORs. If they don't follow those...they go home and change or suck up a fine.

We actually had to do this to someone who accidentally wore the wrong kind of shoe. True accidents happen but the people who would intentionally break the dress codes would have a door opened up.

Your sisterhood is your sisterhood...if you asked them to become a member...no matter what they are a part. Find out what tasks they feel the most comfortable with.

I was asked not to sing! Haha! When we were all signing for door songs, I just ruined it! Yep, I am THAT bad at singing. So I just mouthed the words! haha, but I didn't take offense to it. I just enjoyed my sisters talents!

Ha ha, this sounds like my big. She was asked not to sing during Greek Sing because she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

I always thought I was horrible at formal rush, but looking back, I maybe didn't suck as much as I thought I did.

I pretend to clap because, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to clap on beat. I just can't do it! I always tell the younger girls not to watch me (fake) clap because then they'll be off too! lol!

During rush school, I was great! When it came to the real thing, I begged to work in the kitchen or somewhere else b/c I was comfortable talking to the girls I knew but not the new ones. It worked out fine for me b/c I was made into a rover so I just walked around, made sure everyone had drinks, smiled, introduced myself and kept busy. I didn't have to make small talk all day.

Every year around football intramurals, certain sororities pull out these linebacker sized girls that they stuff into closets and tell 'em not to wear their letter shirts during the school year to whoop up some girls. As an active I was pretty good at formal recruitment. It's odd because I joined through COB and was so nervous about doing FR that fall.

The one thing I was not good at was singing during Pref. I was that girl who mouthed the words.

To PhoenixAzul, I don't think it's so much being ashamed of members but rather understanding who the best reruiters are. If I remember correctly, you are a member of a local at a non-competitive school which probably explains the confusion. At larger, competitive schools it's not just competitive for the PNMs to get the chapters they want...it's also competitive for the chapters to get certain PNMs. Therefore some sisters are more effective recruiters than others and they are utilized more. I feel it's a by-product of frills recruitment...you want every advantage you can get.

I don't think this has nearly as much to do with looks as it does with conversation. We have several girls that have such incredible social skills that they can have effective conversations with everybody...they could make just about anybody feel like they had just met their long-lost twin. We also had drop-dead gorgeous girls who, although fun at chapter events, were shy or came off as stuck-up when recruiting women.

I think in more competitive recruitments the chapters have to work as a team...certain members are stellar recruiters and can convince star PNMs to join, certain members are extremely talented and can be utilized in skits, some are super organized and are a God-send behind the scenes, etc. It has nothing to do with their "worth" in the chapter.
