Sisters who can't recruit

x

Last edited by HeatherAndIvy; 10-19-2008 at 09:58 PM. Reason: I think I didn't really express what I was getting at very well, and it really wasn't meant negatively at all.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but I doubt anyone's going to answer this.

If the OP is aiming for someone to say "Sister Sue" was told she had terrible hygiene and could not recruit, I don't think anyone on GC will say that. However, I am sure there are chapters who have girls who are not good recruiters. Not everyone is and girls shouldn't feel bad about it. I think someone on GC even once admitted they weren't that great so they were asked to help in the kitchen instead.

I'm sure in that case, chapters have asked sisters not to participate in the actual recruitment but they do it with tact.

By your username it's obvious what sorority you are in.

Do you REALLY want to represent your sisterhood by bringing up junk like that during RECRUITMENT TIME?

Just sayin'.

What does Alpha Phi IHQ say?

I remember ages ago an active requested to be excused from Recruiting. She believed the process went against her religious beliefs because "all of God's children are wonderful". True, but not all of God's children are entitled to wear our letters. We let her work in the kitchen and do other go-for type tasks.

Now that's a new excuse I've never heard before. Ingenious!

I sooooo did not mean this negatively (and it's totally unrelated to alpha phi!) so I'm sorry if it came off that way! I'm a new member, so I don't even have involvement in that, but I was wondering because I know girls in other sororities who have piercings and tattoos that are difficult to hide and have been strongly recommended not to go to recruitment... I was just wondering if that happens much. Maybe someone doesn't dress properly or refuses to follow some rule (like the religious one) or something along those lines. Is this question really all that inappropriate?
(Also, my user name actually came from a different sorority I was involved with)

There are always women in my chapter that would prefer not to recruit. Most of them are shy and have a hard time making conversation with strangers. Some of them just hate running up and down the stairs and singing the songs over and over.

Those girls usually apply to be on our food team, which basically serves water and decorates a few cheesecakes, or tab team, which deals with paper work.

Often, women who like talking to people but hate practicing during work week become recruitment counselors.

Any piercings can be hidden with a clear retainer, and hygiene can be fixed.

I always tried to do jobs for recruitment that would keep me off the "floor". I'm good at pouring punch, I'm not good at small talk with people I've never met before.

Correction: In college I was not good at small talk with people I'd never met before. Now? I can make conversation with anybody.. self confidence is a beautiful thing.

I don't get it...that sister was obviously worthy enough to be admitted to membership. Like it or not, she's part of the face of the sorority, even if the face has a stud in it. Shouldn't we be showing PNM's the real sorority, not some whitewashed version of it?

Now, if we're talking about girls who get really anxious about having to talk to strangers or make a mean cheese cake, surely they can be re-assigned to support tasks because, hey, someone's gotta do it. But relegating a girl because she's got a piercing or a tattoo? Doesn't sit right with me. She's good enough to wear letters the other 51 weeks out of the year...my thing is I worry about this going further into issues of weight and appearance, which is counter productive to the goals of building women's self confidence and teamwork.

This makes me think of the public defender in My Cousin Vinny.

I could not have said this better! These are active sisters, not PNMs we are talking about! They are part of your sorority! They are the face of your sorority! Stop trying to hide them!

We have a girl with piercings, punk hair, and several tattoos.
She's an awesome sister, and one of our best recruiters.
