Many fraternities do their real recruiting during the summer. Some may pledge through formal fraternity rush. It's WAY less structured and sorority formal recruitment.
Here's the up-to-date link for fraternity rush: http://www.greeklife.ua.edu/ifcrecruitment.html

As far as summer parties go, I wouldn't be too concerned as many of those are word of mouth. Also, the website said that rush doesn''t start until Aug. 27 which is next week. That may be the reason why it seemed "closed" yesterday. One house in particular rushed me pretty hard that summer but I didn't accept a bid. I went through rush and ended up a different house and have no regrets.

At the link AnchorAlumna was kind enough to post above, you can find on slide #9 within the "Fraternity Life at the Capstone" powerpoint presentation that there is a formal recruitment kickoff cookout on August 25 where potential new members can meet with fraternity representatives, and then recruitment activities such as dinners, socials, etc., go from August 26 to Sept. 10.

That's the website that I pulled my dates from but I checked it again and can't find those dates. It's possible that those were last year. However, I did see the dates in the PP presentation but I also found a start date of Aug 29 ( http://www.greeklife.ua.edu/join.html) as well as Fraternity Recruitment Aug 20 -Sept 10 (http://www.greeklife.ua.edu/calendar.html) from the same site. It's no wonder that it's confusing. The best thing to do is to contact the Office of Greek Life at 348.2693 or possibly contact one of the rush chairman from the link at AnchorAlumna's post.
