I thought I read that the closer to the surface the quake occurs effects how much people "feel" it. Maybe the quake wasn't too far down?

Glad you are ok! I can't imagine what that feels like!

We had a magnitude 6.7 quake in October 2006 and I was surprised that it only registered 6.7. It felt wayyyyy stronger than that.

My friend in LA just posted on Twitter and she was surprised that it was only a 5.8 -- she thought it was stronger as well.

The USGS is saying it was 8.5 miles down (+/- 0.4 mi). Not sure what effect that had on how anyone felt it, but it was a bit more excitement than we've had in a little while. Everyone's fine here at my work. Official word is apparently a 5.4 for this one.
