I bet your late eye doctor knew plenty about hazing. Google "Neptunus Rex" or "Crossing the Line" and see what you get (even photos!), or see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line-crossing_ceremony or http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq92-4.htm (the subpoena of Franklin Roosevelt is great).

I have my grandfather's Neptunus Rex certificate framed and hanging - it's an entertaining read.
