You are both correct. I am the Faculty-Staff Adviser to five GLOs at SDSU:

Alpha Chi Omega
Gamma Phi Beta

Kappa Alpha
Kappa Sigma
Phi Kappa Psi

Imagine my disappointment to learn this morning that one of my fraternities has been implicated in a drug bust.

I "adopted" Phi Kappa Psi last fall when another staff member left the university and caused the fraternity to be in need of a replacement adviser. Over the last two semesters, I made attempts to stay up to date with them; but, my e-mails to the chapter president went unanswered.

I'm sort of half expecting to be called in to be asked if I knew about any of this...or if parents will call up demanding to know "Where was their adviser when all of this drug dealing was going on?" I assure you all, I had no knowledge of these activities and, in fact, had made good faith attempts to keep tabs on their scholarship, recognition status, etc.

I disagree with your statement. The university spent a year conducting a massive drug operation at and around SDSU - something most universities would not have done. I would hardly call that "turning a blind eye". The university has been widely commended today for it's willingness to allow agencies on campus and for it's willingness to address this problem which is an issue on many US campuses.

At any rate, I am not yet aware of any sororities being involved. If any of my girls are found to be involved, I will hit the roof.

As other posters have said, I know this is no laughing matter, but the 21 Jump Street reference made me choke on my drink.

Are you referring to this statement in particular:

"According to James Kitchen, SDSU's Vice President of Student Affairs, the fraternities have been suspended pending a hearing into evidence gathered. Several fraternity members were among the SDSU students arrested as part of the investigation – which included an extensive undercover operation in tandem with the Drug Enforcement Agency."

Well, I was referring to something even lower on the page:

OK, so that I understand the situation....the six fraternities are currently placed on temporary suspension until further notice depending the results of the investigations. They (6 fraternities) have not lost their recognition from the university and/or IFC...is that correct?

Indeed they do! If a student proves to be a danger to themselves or the campus, they can be immediately removed from housing and the campus pending a formal individual student conduct hearing.

I think the answers to the above may be found, in part, here under code of conduct:

Six SDSU Fraternities Placed On Suspension as a Result of Drug-Related Arrests
As a result of a San Diego State University Police investigation into drug trafficking/sales, six SDSU fraternities have been placed on interim suspension.

The six fraternities include: Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Theta, Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Mu.

According to James Kitchen, SDSU's Vice President of Student Affairs, the fraternities have been suspended pending a hearing into evidence gathered. Several fraternity members were among the SDSU students arrested as part of the investigation – which included an extensive undercover operation in tandem with the Drug Enforcement Agency.

To provide updated information on the investigation and arrests, SDSU has established a special Web site for students, parents, faculty/staff and members of the public at http://www.sdsu.edu/information.

This is truly a sad day in State's history (Folks from SDSU call it "State")...

We'll go back to the anti-greekness on campus culminating by the mid-1990's...

It was FUGLY in the early 1990's... Greeks were ousted from all on campus activities relegated to parties prior to greek row being built.
