Two Fraternity Presidents Arrested over the Weekend

Presidents from ATO and Pike at New Mexico State University were both arrested by campus police. Both had to do with alcohol.

This is getting totally out of hand!

It really disturbs me and many others that young men/women can do anything in this country but drink at the age of eighteen, like vote and die for the USA!

Now, they have records if convicted.

Both of these guys are old enough to drink.

It's hard to say -- they may have been way out of line.

On the other hand, sometimes campus police can be a little "over-zealous" when it comes to students.

Many times the campus police force are called untrained and cowboys. Actually they are trained and have to go through rigerous training and are commissioned through the County they are located in. This is mandated by the states to even carry a weapon.

For example, the C P at the Pittsburg State University also have powers off campus within a certain range of said campus. They also must follow the law about probable cause. This is done by either a call to them, eye balling a crime, but cannot jsut bust in anywhere they please. Of course, everything will depend on the circumstances.

I know this is all conjecture, but I was present for my share of police encounters in college (at various places) and almost always there was at least one drunk person mouthing off to the police, but never did I see an officer get out of line. If anything, they stood there and just took a lot of that crap from some kid in front of 100 people and ignored it.

As for the second case- the President confessed to providing alcohol to minors. There is a huge difference between that and having underage drinkers around who bring their own stuff. Chapter provision of alcohol to minors (and as President, this young man can be seen to represent the chapter at large) is a HUGE risk management violation in any GLO and on the short list of items in big print.

Based on what I am reading here- I don't see any reason to be upset with the police.

You are very probably right.

Back when I went to college, police (campus and other) were not nearly as well trained as they are now. The small town city cops in particular were very tough on students.

I find total professionalism in almost all of my contacts with law enforcement officers today. However, everyone has bad days, and there is a small percentage of them who probably shouldn't be in their profession.

The coincidence of the same officer encountering two fraternity presidents breaking the law in the same evening may need some scrutiny. In reality, though, the timing probably is coincidental.
