In fact, I'll go so far as to say that your opinion actually agrees with the main point: sexualizing adolescents (especially girls) has been a part of culture (and legitimate art) for centuries, and this example is just another silly data point. You're agreeing with this premise implicitly in this post - which I think is good, because I think it's borderline self-evident, and it should give a lot more context to why this should not be the shit circus it has become.

No, I'm disagreeing because he's saying Jodie Foster playing a character that caused controversy because she was young & sexy (and played it to perfection, which was another thing that raised eyebrows - how damn good she was in it) is the same as Miley Cyrus being herself in pictures that caused controversy because she's young & sexy.
Now if Miley was in a movie and playing a teen who has sex for the first time complete with graphic scenes, that would be a better comparison.
I never said I thought the pics were horrible or anything, just that for her managers/parents to blame Vanity Fair & AL on anything is ridiculous when they had to sign off on it. Backpedaling.

Slow down there..I never brought up that she played it to perfection...but yes...the point I was trying to raise is that very young actors and actresses have have done some very controversial things in the course of their careers very early on and suffered no real ill effects from it.
Heck, compared to what I have seen on TV today, I don't think Foster's performance wasn't that big of a deal...BUT considerign the time period and the graphic violence of the scene she was involved in at the end of the movie, I can see how in the 70s is was a big deal.

Oh, ok, I got cha now. We're good I thought you were saying Miley & Jodie were on the same level of skills (really not so much).
The difference is in the way they're handling it. Miley's already raised some eyebrows putting pics on myspace, now this? And then blaming it on the magazine? Jodie on the other hand, was very clear that "this was only a movie" and followed it up with something Disney, I believe. She never tried to "disown" being in the movie.

I agree with your final point, pretty much completely.
I also agree that there isn't a direct comparison, but I think on the whole they are both indicative of a larger cultural/artistic meme that has existed since, well, at least the Renaissance. Probably forever.
