I was in college.
Although I have to admit I never liked this song, even when it came out -- I didn't really like much of anything Billy Joel came out with in the 80s. I much preferred his earlier stuff -- "Summer, Highland Falls," "New York State of Mind," "Prelude/Angry Young Man" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" and the like. Like Elton John, I always thought he was at his best when he focused on the piano.
Besides, the beginning always reminded me of the beginning of
Another Pleasant Valley Sunday -- which, having watched The Monkees
every Saturday when I was kid, I liked much better.
