Some inane McCain-isms...enjoy!!

"I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." March 2000

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/hongop.shtml

On April 1, 2007, McCain and a congressional delegation strolled the streets of Baghdad with a massive armored escort. There were 100 soldiers, 3 Blackhawk helicopters and 2 Apache Gunships accompanying the delegation, with snipers watching over them. After walking through the Shorja market in Baghdad under the tight security, McCain claimed that there “are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today.” In a press conference after his Baghdad tour, McCain told a reporter that his visit to the market today was proof that you could indeed “walk freely” in some areas of Baghdad.

“Americans are very frustrated, and they have every right to be. We’ve wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives.”

"I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles, personally, I prefer someone who has a grounding in my faith," the GOP presidential hopeful told the Web site in an interview published Saturday.

At a Republican fund-raiser, he jokingly asked "Why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly." His answer was that "Janet Reno was the father."

In response to the question, Mr. McCain said that he was not going to take a position that it was proper “to declare divorces invalid because of someone who feels they weren’t treated fairly in court; we are getting into a tar-baby of enormous proportions and I don’t know how you get out of that.”

Daemon, this is exactly why I asked - of course I can use the freaking Internet, I just wanted to see what you thought was so ridiculous. Remember - you made the claim, YOU have to back it up. Those are the rules of discussion, dude. Seriously.

The Chelsea Clinton joke is marginal - it's out of line, but it's the kind of joke that people make every day without second thought. It is only "bad" because of his stature, which doesn't really excite or interest me.

The two racial incidents are issues - I'm not sure whether "tarbaby" is used in a fashion that would make sense here in other parts of the country, so I can't really speak, but obviously the term "gook" is inappropriate, even considering his imprisonment. He's noted he was speaking only about his captors, and while being a POW must have sucked and I can't really expect him to forget or ignore that, he should probably never use that term in public. However, there was no outcry by Asian-American groups about his campaign, so I'm not sure where to go from here. These two are the actual issues - not a Janet Reno joke, of which similar jokes were made every night on national television.

However, the rest? Seriously? You're reaching badly - stick to the racial slurs, and not "walking through the streets of Baghdad." What do you expect the guy to say?

This is off the whole "McCain is a racist ignoramus" theme going on...

I remember 5-6 years ago thinking about gender and politics and thinking that the first serious female political candidate would be hammered by innuendos that she wasn't tough enough to be commander-in-chief or lacked the kind of real experience that a President needs, since for so long those were the perceived weaknesses of most women in power.

I find this highly amusing with Clinton's recent attacks on Obama. Instead of what I assumed (that gender stereotypes would come to a full head with the first female presidential candidate), it is the female candidate accusing the other that he lacks the capacity to be tough as a commander in chief and lacks experience. I'm left wondering if this is really because Clinton has such a tough image that the normal gender stereotypes don't work on her, or is it racism trumping sexism?

Eh... just a random thought.

And don't forget his homage to Bush and the Beach Boys... he did this at a town hall in my very own hometown:

"Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!" He caught a little flak for that one. IMHO, I really don't think you need to be joking about bombing anyone when you are running for office and will be the commander in chief. We've already seen what a cavalier attitude toward war can accomplish. I would think someone with his history would know that.

While I'd never use tar baby for fear of being misunderstood, I don't think it really has an racial connotation is the sense he used it.

It's a situation that you get further into as you take efforts to get out, right, both in Br'er Rabbit and in the sense McCain meant it.

So let's take that one off the table, I think.

Dude...if I walked thru the most dangerous streets in the world with 100 soldiers, snipers, gunships and Jack Bauer, I guess those streets WOULD be safe!

It's not reaching...it ridiculous...let me drop him off in West Baltimore by himself, he would shyt himself before he said he was safe....

Speaking from his Kentucky office in Dawson Springs, the Imperial Wizard exclaimed that anything or anyone is better than having that "crazy ass bitch" as President.

This is the first time in Klan history that any member of the KKK has ever publicly supported an African American candidate for the presidency.

KKK lodges all over America have been gathering and holding rallies supporting the black presidential candidate.

I didn't know what seemed odder - the Klan endorsing Obama for president or the fact that they vote Democratic

I think this is very disputable. While I might agree that the War in Iraq has not been run overly well, or even poorly at times, I don't think the decision to go to and continually wage the war was "cavalier." Disagreement about our handling of the situation is perfectly fine, but a cavalier attitude about putting people in harms way is arguably treason.

Bush at War by Bob Woodward gives the best account I've seen regarding the decision to go to war, and while it certainly isn't overly flattering to the Bush administration, it doesn't portray Bush as cavalier. Quite the opposite, actually.
