I believe it's a remake/reboot of the original. However when I first heard about it, they said they weren't going to go so much on the back story since Halloween was getting blasted for focusing too much on Michael Myers' childhood. Not none, just not so much. We'll see how that goes.

That's too bad. I think that the back stories (especially as the sequels unfolded) were what made Nightmare special. Freddy was a three-dimensional villain, and I liked that.

I'm already disappointed.  This isn't from the most credible of sources but it may be accurate.

It's unclear whether or not they will remake the original, but it doesn't sound like Craven will be a part of it -- or even Freddy himself (Robert Englund). Platinum Dunes is also working on a relaunch of the Friday the 13th series. According to Variety, "both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, just as Platinum Dunes did with the Nispel-directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
