i understand back in the days when communication was more difficult, but today with the advent of the internet and other forms of communication, there should be no reason for groups to have more than one name. if you're gonna have a 3 letter org, there are 13824 possible letter arrangements. i know there are bout probably between 200 & 300 already taken up by Social, Honorary, Music, Service & Professional orgs, but you still got a whole lot left to choose from.

As was said, the advent of the PC!
Bairds was at one time the best place to look, but evne they have a much more watered down directory.
When I started a local I named BX, I knew there were no Nationals of that name. But I found out later there there were more locals with the same name. After affiliation, the point became moot.
The combonation of letters as BlueNYC2 said are huge.
Try Greekpages.com and see which beginning letters are most popular.

There's an Omega Phi Alpha local fraternity in California that just recently became affiliated with DU. They retained the Omega Phi Alpha as their chapter name and are very proud of their long local history.
It's caused a little confusion before, and Google searches pull up a lot of their stuff.

I was so surprised when I read they went national! But good for them. I am sure it was a long and hard decision to be made among lots of undergrads and alums.

Kappa Alpha Psi resembles Kappa Alpha
Alpha Phi Alpha resembles Alpha Phi Fraternity (for women) and
Omega Phi Alpha...well, they must not know that Sigma Gamma Rho's use the yellow tea rose as it's flower and blue and gold as it's colors....

OPA's colors are light blue, dark blue, and gold. But I've noticed that a lot of organizations share the same colors as others. Alpha Xi Delta has the same colors as OPA and Sigma Gamma Rho (if SGRho's are the two different blues and gold as well).
As you may also notice, that Alpha Phi Omega and Omega Phi Alpha also share the same three leadership principles. APO played a very big part in creating OPA.

A lot of organizations share the same colors, and a lot share the same kinds of flowers. Nothing is really original, and most organizations pick the colors and the flowers they did to represent them because of the meaning behind them and what it would bring to that organization, not to flat out copy another.

That's exactly what I was thinking! I know there's not a problem with another organization duplicating any of the Divine 9 orgs...but again with today's technology and means of communication, there really should be no reason why there should be another organization with another. That's pretty funny that I went to this topic, 'cause I was talking to him about this with my frat bro!
