Well I know my response was surprise due to not being aware of what Putin did this year that was so significant as to earn him this recognition, bad or good. Surely there was someone in the world that did something this year that was of major impact, good or bad?

I think he's freaking me out, but no I haven't heard a lot about him this year in particular. I suspect I'll find out when I get that particular Time.

He's definitely a nationalist and by no means wrapped around the U.S.'s finger (not to mention he seems to sanction the permanant "silencing" of people who speak out against him), but he's been that way the whole time he's been leader. Perhaps its based on his increasing importance when it comes to russia/china/middle east/U.S. relations.

Even though I'm not doing anything with it in DC right now, Russian polity is my specialty, so I consider this very, very interesting... Putin's becoming more and more like Yeltsin (not a compliment)... again, very interesting.
