Why Kappa Alpha Psi?

Nupes, start from the beginning? Why Kappa Alpha Psi? When I say start from the beginning, start from when you 1st heard of or had contact with the fraternity. Even if you knew about it as a child. I would like to hear the stories.

I wanted Kappa because beforehand, my game was weak as hell. With Kappa, I am GUARANTEED a fly honey, and a few side jawns. Kappa made me the modern day Max Julian of Philadelphia.

My first time being exposed to Kappa Alpha Psi?

Monday, April 3, 1990 at Ohio State University.

I was visiting OSU as a high school student during one of those minority college visitation events (we even stayed overnight at a nearby Holiday Inn). Anyhow, after our banquet and before the party, some fellas came in and put on a 5 minute step show. I didn't know who they were, all I remembered was they stepped with red and white canes. Later on I found out they were Kappas.

Why Kappa? I can sum it all up in just one word:

MYSTIQUE!

IMHO Kappa has the largest mystique quotient than any other organization. And that is what truly intrigued me to pursue the organization for so long.

Growing up as a kid, all I knew was Alpha, because my dad is an Alpha. The whole time though up until college I had no clue what a fraternity was. My dad had Alpha paraphernalia all over the house. Paddles were/are hung in the basement, and I never paid it much if any attention at all. My brother is 3 years older than me, so I would often hear him come back from college talking about joining a fraternity, but I still never paid it much attention. When I got to college, is when I started to take interest in joining a fraternity. That's pretty much all everyone talked about was joining a fraternity or sorority. My brother(also a Nupe Kappa Chapter) and I were roomies in college so I would just listen to he and his friends talk about the different glos. Later on I started asking questions. I got the basic answers, that I wanted, now it was time for me to find the fraternity that interest me. To make a long story short, to me the Nupes just seemed to have it all together looking from the outside in. They were so professional, and they dressed and carried themselves in a professional way as well. I never saw a step show until I joined, but I was able to see above ground pledging my freshman year. And from what I saw, the Nupes pledges were flawless and perfect compared to the other glos. The Nupes ran the whole school and the President of the University was also a Nupe who pledged there in 1962. At that point, I knew that I was doing nothing but Kappa. I wouldn't be greek at all if I didn't get selected to be a Nupe.

Below is a picture of the scroller pack that I was able to see pledge above ground when I was a freshmen. The number kl2ub is my ADP and the kl7ub is my DP.

LG, he gave my brother and I an obscene gesture (I'm sure you know what it was) when we both came home from school, both as Nupes. What's even worse a lot of my dad's friends are also Nupes, and they tease him every chance they get about us pledging Kappa. One of his friends he went to college with wrote me one of my recommendation letters, and brings it up in conversation with my dad just to get under his skin. LOL.

Btw: I won't post what my dad refers to a Nupe as, because I know DSTCHAOS will use it on this message board whenever she can.

My short story.

Coming out of high school, I didn't like Kappa Alpha Psi. We had a Kappa League at my high school. It appeared that those involved in the Kappa League only cared about stepping, getting girls, partying, and very little emphasis on community service. I thought that the Kappa Leaguers were a direct reflection of the Kappas who mentored them. I admit that I was very ignorant of greek culture at the time.

When I started my college matriculation, I honestly had my sights on another organization. I eventually noticed things about that organization that ultimately detracted my interest. Around my sophomore year, I began employment in the University Bookstore. The managers were Kappas, as well as several other co-workers. Given that I had negative views, and limited knowledge, of Kappa Alpha Psi anyway, I wanted to utilize my employment to experience first-hand interaction with its members to ascertain if there is an inkling of a chance that I MIGHT become interested.

During my employment, I closely observed how the Kappas carried themselves, how they interacted with each other, how they treated the ladies on campus, how they treated ME, and what they actually did in the community. I was very impressed with their confident, suave, gentleman-like mannerisms. Not to mention, they were well-dressed, dapper students (they sported the bow-tie and suspenders better than any group of gentlemen on the yard). I noticed that I had many of the qualities that were evident in them. I felt it was a perfect fit.

Also, they were smoother than a mutha***** in the step shows, and had the ladies screaming as if they were at a Marvin Gaye live concert. They were campus, living legends. They possessed an aura that the other three fraternities on the yard had to pray for.

I spoke to one of the members privately about their community service endeavors. He told me exactly what they were doing in the community. I vividly remembered him telling me that the chapter is active in the community; they just didn't feel the need to broadcast it. He was very articulate, and little did he know that our conversation (along with my overall observation of the chapter) was the "coup de grace" in winning me over as a Kappa interest. Once I made my decision, I didn't want to research any other organization.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out for me in my pursuit at the undergraduate level. However, I did not allow this to discourage me, as I sought membership at the alumni level.


In closing, I am VERY grateful that God provided me a job at the University Bookstore because my daily, personal interaction with the members of Kappa was the reason I decided to join. It helped remove some of the preconcieved notions that I had about the organization.

I'm proud to be a Kappa man.

Funny, I felt the same way about Kappa until some of my friends crossed. I was a bigger fan of the Alphas anyway. Once they crossed my friends( non-greek at the time) became close to their whole line. We hung out with them even did some community service with them and supported their events. The always made us seem welcome. They even made us "honorary sweethearts". After sometime one started to smell himself and we aren't as close as we use to be.
However, to this day when I hear their chapter anthem play my friends and I still get hype. We still got love for those men of KAPPA ALPHA Make the girls SIGH!lol I mean PSI.

In any case, my dad is a NUPE from AE

When I was growing up, he never beat it into my head to, "pledge pledge pledge." On the contrary, it's what my dad didn't say, but rather what he did. His actions, his mannerisms, his values.. I respect my father an immense deal, and when I came to the yard on my campus, I saw the bros and how they carried themselves, and I held the same level of respect for them as I held for my dad. All "Kut from the same Diamond," so to speak..


Na, I'm just kidding. I saw them at the talent show and they had the suspenders and the bowties and they started shimmying and the ladies were throwing money and . . . Female para on the stage and screaming like "they were at a Marvin Gaye" concert"...

And MAN I wanted to twirl.

Oh, and there were members of other organizations.. Let me say that they were a bit too "Carl Lewis" for me..
