Cell phones are not a necessity item, we all survived fine without them for many years, did we not?
I've caught kids texting during class, taking pictures, recording others without permission, etc...Why the hell does the kid need the phone on during the day? They are at school, and they are there to learn, not take phone calls and text their friends two classrooms down. They can't wait the 55 minutes of class time to "talk" with their friends during the passing period or at snack/lunch? I understand having them for emergencies, but what happened in the old days when we had emergencies? Oh wait, our parents came and got us or called the school to get us out of class.
How many of these phone calls that students are getting are actual emergencies? Maybe less than .01% WTF are parents thinking calling their kids during class? It's CLASS!
If, as a parent, you don't like the rules for the school where you child is designated to go, perhaps you shouldn't send them there. I don't see how expecting school to be a learning environment and expecting it to be uninterrupted by a ringing phone is archaic.

I suggest that you read my post, as you obviously didn't. I never said students should be allowed to use them during class or school as they wished; I said that schools SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO KEEP THEM. In fact, if you HAD read it, you would have known that I supported fining students who have them out during the day.
It was a 5 sentence post. Was it that hard to read past the first sentence?

Apparently you didn't even read your own post, your first sentence was, "Ugh, I think those cell phone rules are so stupid." Were you not referring to all rules or just select ones? Prhaps you should be a little clearer in your own posts.
I did read your post, and I thought it was idiotic, but that is my opinion, and as we all know those are varied here...so ;et's just move along, shall we?

As a teacher, I can see both sides of cell phone rules. Teachers and administration don't want cell phones to interrupt learning, but students want to be able to keep in touch with their families and loved ones. Lately, I've been of the opinion that students should be able to keep their phones on them for safety reasons; however, they should not be allowed to have them ON during class. With all of the recent school shootings, I am a bit apprehensive about telling students they shouldn't have their phones with them.
