Yes, because insurance companies weren't as stingy and restrictive regarding treatment back then, as they are now.
Due to this, a lot of dentists no longer take "assignment" (i.e. the norm is fast becoming where the patient must pay the dentist and then get reimbursed [usually
partially, not fully] from the insurance company).
