I am still on the fence about this story. I'll give it until the morning before I believe it. I am skeptical because certain reports are stating that she died having a tummy tuck and breast implants. Call me naive, crazy, or whatever, but I don't see his mother needing breast implants.

Secondly, it's just one story picked up and reported by various sources. I know that news typically operates like this, but it is literally ONE story that is repeated and each reporting sources has subbed their name as the person that has "confirmed" the story or spoke with the "spokesperson."

Lastly, I just found it strange that this "spokesperson" was speaking under anonymity "because all family members had not been contacted." Who else is there to contact if Kanye was contacted? It's just all too strange to me...

The only thing that gives this story some credence is the fact that Kanye stated in his song "Roses" off the Late Registration album that his grandmother was having difficulties because she her heart couldn't take the anesthesia.

[hijack] Ok, for real, don't think that I'm a nerd because I know that. I loves me some Kanye, so I know most of his songs. Plus I was listening to the album earlier. [/hijack]

Maybe it's something that runs in the family.

I'm waiting for a more definitive news release.

I didn't know Dr.West was a Soror. Rest in piece, Soror West.

I feel for Kanye. Their closeness...their bond! Whoah!

I think I read that in Jet some years ago that his mom is an AKA.

One reason that I have been able to Kanye so much is because we're both our mothers' only children (and are educators). When it is just you and your mom, you got no choice but to stick together. I can't even imagine what he's going through.

ETA: She had some type of surgery. What, we don't know

Wow, I am so hurt to hear that Kanye lost his mom. There is some song he has about his mom that my brother played for my mom and she really got a kick out of it.

You know that Fred Hammond lost his mom this past weekend too.

I am starting to believe the story about Kanye's mom. If it were a hoax, I am sure it would have been put to rest by now. I feel sad for him.

News reports that I just read stated that she had went to a doctor not long ago to have the procedure, but he refused to operate because he wanted her to have medical clearance from an internist due to a pre-existing cardiac condition. The doctor stated that he never head from her again and that she may have gone to another doctor and met with an untimely demise. It's all so unfortunate....

Rest in peace, Soror West

ETA: Here is an official statement from the family:

Kanye West's family issued a statement Monday after the death of the singer's mother, Donda West, of possible surgical complications:

"Kanye West, his family and friends would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country since the death of his mother, Dr. Donda West.

"After working in higher education for 31 years, Dr. Donda West and Kanye West co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with the mission of helping to combat the severe dropout problem in high schools across the country. The first and signature initiative of the Kanye West Foundation is Loop Dreams. Designed to capitalize on students existing interest in hip-hop, Loop Dreams challenges students to learn more about what's behind hip-hop culture in order to help them develop skills, express themselves creatively and be empowered.

"In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. West's name to the Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute. Those donations can be made by visiting the Foundation's Web site, www.KanyeWestFoundation.org or by mail at Kanye West Foundation, 8560 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069.

"Details of funeral services are still pending."

I hope this isn't true either...
