Thanks.
And please refrain from derailing threads so you can recruit for your org. I know little to nothing about your organization, but spreading the good word all over message boards isn't the way to promote an organization...

checking of parental background and financial standing is all a myth.

Reality in my case. One chapter called my parents to confirm some of the information that I had provided on my panhellenic registration form, as well as get more info about my family and what my parents did for a living. How do I know this? My dad told me--he had no idea what was going on since he knew nothing about Greek life. Then, in a late round, the sisters who were assigned to me that night "casually" mentioned things like, "Sooooooo, your dad's in the medical field??????"

Mine too but I wasn't really shocked. As Rushees, we had to put the information on the forms. There was a 99.9% chance that the sororities were going to verify it.

I've heard of verifying grades but never parent's incomes.

Yea, dad might be a "doctor" but whose to say that although he looks like a big shot, the practice isn't about to go into bankruptcy.

That's carrying things too far.

Coming from the south, I knew enough about sororities to realize that someone might verify and collect more information.

But I agree that knowing what a parent does tells only part of the story. A chapter should not assume that a mother or father who is in a blue collar profession doesn't have a million in the bank. I think most collegians and advisers would agree that the most important thing is not whether the PARENTS have money, but whether the PNM has the financial responsibility to handle money wisely and be current on her dues. My roommate paid all of her college expenses as well as dues, and she did so by holding down a restaurant manager job while also going to school full time. And maintaining a high GPA.

Conversely, there were plenty of women in my chapter who had a lot of family money and they didn't know the first thing about fiscal responsibility.
