Don't forget that there are psycho fans (myself included) who want to know every single little inconsequential detail about everyone and everything in the HP books.

I thought this was interesting:
Quote:
Thatcherite Britain, a French philosopher said Friday on the day of the last novel's publication in French.
"It must be said from the start that Harry Potter is deeply political and that the books speak of today's England," Jean-Claude Milner told the left-wing newspaper Liberation.
"Reading it, one can see that J.K. Rowling -- like many cultured English people -- believes there was a real Thatcherite revolution, that it was a disaster, and that culture's only chance is to survive as an occult science."
According to Milner, Harry's world of magic -- and especially the elite public school setting of the Hogwarts school of wizardry -- offer a means of resistance against a triumphant middle-class represented by the non-magic Muggles.

And the winner of the "reading things into Harry Potter that aren't there unrelated to the evils of witchcraft award" is.....
I'm not saying there aren't societal parallels, but that it isn't some sort of "statement" on today's England and what have you.

LOL i totally agree. I was like... where is this guy getting this from... i'm sure if i wrote a story about a flying unicorn and his posse of dancing ponies, translated it to french and someone interpreted it... you could compare it to the bush administration. yes of course that makes total sense.

All that paragraph made me think was, "Hogwarts wasn't a public school."
Oh, listen. Hedwig's Theme is the next on my playlist. I must go now--I can't muster up a dreamy glaze and a goofy smile while I'm typing.

FYI
Public school has a different meaning in the U.K. - it doesn't make sense to us, I know, but a public school is actually a private school, like Eton, as opposed to a government school.

^^^Ahhh....gotcha. Well, as I've never lived in modern-day England, I suppose the article could hold more truth than I give it credit for? Lol

Yeah...I don't know. I really enjoyed the HP books, but...it's really JUST a book. If Dumbledore didn't sex it up was another man in any of the books, then as far as I'm concerned he's just another sexually ambiguous character. In general I don't really see the point of knowing all of these add'l details that didn't play out in the books about someone who is...well not real. It just seems to be a bit much to me.

Lol. All I have to say about Gandalf is (ignoring the canon of the stories, he's essentially an angel) look at the actor who portrayed him

I know!!! That's the first thing I looked at.
One of my B&N co-workers told me she also heard that Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald.

Yeah, that close friendship they had was much more of a fall in love thing. It's why the last thing he wanted to do was have to fight him.
I really think it makes the fact that Dumbledore was the one to bring Grindelwald to justice a much more compelling story than just "Good wizard beats bad wizard"
