I just saw her on the morning news, and she knew the minute it came out of her mouth that it wasn't making sense. I still think she was just SO nervous, her mind went blank and she knew she had to say something. If you think about it honestly, I would think that each of us choked on something when we were her age.

My own personal reason (since nobody asked!) is that we need to bring back Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego!!
one of my favorite games of all time! I also loved the show on PBS. Almost as good (but not quite) is the globe they sell in the Discovery Store that has a stylus and you have to pinpoint countries as fast as you can. I play with that toy every time I go into the store.

OMG, it was absolutely horrible to watch her response...But, to be fair, that was really a bad/unusual question.
I think most of the contestants would have had a hard time pulling something out of their asses to answer that.

I did see one benefit of her mocking up the answer: At least she won't be under Donald for a year.

U.S. Americans is correct though, I have heard that before (like on one of those mcglauglin type shows) as opposed to Caribean types who refer to themselves as Americans as do many South Americans. So yes there are other Americas and therefore other Americans. As I started watching I thought, "wow, she might be smart too" but then she talked more and nope.

She Attempts to Redeem Herself!

From iwon.com: Pageant Contestant Re-Answers Question

Aug 28, 11:24 AM (ET)

"COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - This time, the question was a little easier for Miss Teen South Carolina.

After being stumped by a Miss Teen USA pageant question on live television Friday night, Lauren Caitlin Upton's confused, mangled response has been drawing a lot of attention.

The 18-year-old got a chance to redeem herself Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she was again asked why one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a map.

"I would love to re-answer that question," Upton said. "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography."

That was much better than her previous response, which included "U.S. Americans" and mentions of South Africa and "the Iraq."

A YouTube video of Upton has drawn a couple million hits and thousands of comments, many of them with harsh remarks for the Lexington High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

Upton was taking her flubbed answer - and the attention - in stride.

"Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question."

Upton's former principal Creig Tyler remembered her as a well-rounded student.

"She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well," Tyler told The (Columbia) State newspaper.

Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz won the crown. Upton was third runner-up."

I'm a little surprised at her answer since she comes from a relatively strong school district in SC.

Maybe her schools were just so good they didn't have the flaws of other U.S. American schools

This came up in the ADPi forum, and in a second she could have thrown out the whole 'state-administered exam focus' out as a reason that other subjects (science, geography, history, etc) are not focused on. But oh well... c'est la vie.

Actually, that reminds me that on Telemundo this weekend, I saw "¿Dónde está Carmen Sandiego?".
would it be obvious to guess/assume that Carmen might actually be in San Diego?

i mean, at least you had a shot of finding Waldo. but geez. the answer may be right in front of us all these years. How do weknow the lyric isnt, "Where in the world is Carm? In Sandiego!"

people flub songlyrics allthe time, thats all i'm saying.

okandimdonekthxbye.

Jimmy Kimmel Live gave the best interpretation of this little girl's answer. He broke it down on the chalkboard. Like such as and U.S. Americans and the Iraq...

I don't know how she knows she's attending ASU because they just started taking applications for next fall's freshman class a couple of days ago.

If she's not already enrolled for this semester, I don't see the harm in saying she "plans to attend" regardless of whether she's already been accepted or not.

She is a freshman at ASU this year. She was actually featured on ESPN's "College Gameday" showing everyone where App. State was on a map after their victory over Michigan.

I have to say, despite all the crap she got post pageant, she's handled herself pretty well.
