Is anyone else finding the number of UA students and alums coming out of the woodwork for this thread pretty amazing?

Well, you get tired of lurking when you hear a bunch of alums that are talking about the current affairs at your school like they know what's going on. Rumors are rumors, and I just want to set the record straight.

I think the UA alums on this thread have been pretty clear that they were talking about things in their day. Of course things change. Old Row membership has changed over the years ... things have changed even since I graduated a couple years back. It's great that you're a current student who is informed and giving us the latest, but I would try to stay respectful ... and I wasn't referring just to you, so don't take it personally.

I am just a mom with a daughter at Bama...i don't claim to know it all and have found these threads very informative and helpful...i love all the discussion and input that all the members have taken the time and effort to give. I have no problem with someone trying to give advice or information...whether it be absolutely 100% accurate or not. Someone will always correct information that is not quite right...which i thought was the reason for this thread...to discuss all things greek. So keep it coming i say!

That's the right attitude to have. I find it amusing/interesting that as the thread has gone on, more UA folks have registered and started chiming in.... meaning there are a ton more watching and reading but still lurking. I suppose there's no better way to get more people reading GC than UA recruitment! And this is for everyone: Just keep it respectful, and remember that alums are the ones who keep the chapters afloat, so let them reminisce a bit.

Old Row: SAE, DKE, KA, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gam, Sigma Nu
Kappa, KD, Chi O, Alpha Chi, Phi Mu, Tri Delt, Alpha Gam - has to do with social distinction, typically, but not always, stronger chapters.
First cirlce: KD, Tri Delt, Alpha Gam - has to do with location on Sorority Row.
Machine: Has old and new row houses.
Fraternities and sororities are equal in the machine. Proof would be all of the sorority women in SGA positions and two female SGA presidents in the past few years.
Fraternities go for the quality over quantity idea. Most of the fraternity pledge classes this year are around 40 men. The fraternities are making a concerted effort to grow in size. However, that takes time.
That's all I can think of for now. Most of you who aren't UA grads are, well, clueless.

I never see ADPi listed as an "Old Row" or "First Circle", even though only KD has been there longer (1904). Does anybody know why?

I moved to Alabama in 1994. I only have rumors and gossip to go by, so I have no idea if any of it is accurate. I was told ADPi used to be a member of Old Row but at some point resigned. I've heard conflicting dates of when it happened. I've also heard several extremely different explanations as to why. There's no point in repeating any of them because it would be pure conjecture.
Over my tenure many members have asked if we could join or re-join Old Row (whichever the case may be). I imagine most or many of the non-OR Chapters wonder this as well. The primary reason is they believe it would benefit us in Recruitment. Skit Day/Round 3 is known as the "Old Row cut" for PNM's. While I don't have access to any stats, I imagine all the non-OR Chapters suffer from this. Last year the number of parties a PNM could attend was increased from 6 (# of OR Chapters) to 7. I would love to see some stats on how all the non-OR Chapters faired with possible increased return rates.
Anyways, any Chapter would have to be invited to (re-)join and to the best of my knowledge we haven't been. For that matter I don't believe any additional sororities or fraternities have been invited, at least not since I became involved. It seems OR is content with their membership as is. If we were invited would we? There are some policy issues that would have to be addressed first, so I can't answer that question.

UA Panhellenic has not yet published a list of each Chapter's total membership numbers now that Formal Recruitment is complete. Panhellenic Chapter Total is currently set at 180. Therefore unless someone has some insider info, we don't know if anyone is below this.

Recs/COB
If any chapters at Alabama participate in COB...when/how/should additional recs be sent to the chapters? I suspect one problem my daughter had during regular recruitment was that she only had one rec per chapter that she was interested in. Had we realized their importance, we would have gotten more. Are recs as much a factor during COB?

The more the better, I would say ... during any form of recruitment.

Bamamama, I am an advisor. One reference per chapter is plenty. You should look for references to sororities that do not have one for your daughter. Numerous references to a single chapter are not an asset.

PS My chapter requires that a valid reference be in hand to pledge a girl.

Here's my personal advice and opinion on the subject.
