DD said Theta took 33, she thought. The list probably won't go out until ADPi does their rush this week. (They don't have a house and do it the week after the rest of the sororities)
I know too that another local girl went GPhi and another friend's dd got a bid to a different house after another house said "See You Tomorrow" ....and then she didn't so she is very sad. The mom, who wasn't Greek, wasn't very happy about her dd not being very happy.

How does that work in terms of fairness? I mean, wouldn't that put ADPi at a disadvantage to the other groups and perpetuate the feeling that they were getting the girls who were turned down from other groups?

I don't know the history behind that - perhaps someone else does? They used to be on campus a long time ago and then came back on (don't know when and where about that)
I have no idea why it isn't at the same time. Often wondered myself!

Southern Sororities in the Midwest...a history lesson
I think they do rush like a lot of the locals do. They aren't in the same situation as the other sororities...they don't have a house. The Nebraska houses are big and almost everybody but freshmen live in.
When I was in college Phi Mu and ADPi both lived away from greek row in university housing. There were 4 houses down by a three dorm complex called Harper Schramm Smith, that although is the most popular complex now, was the least popular back then because it was "so far away". Chi Phi and Triangle lived in the other two houses, and university food service provided their food and all four greek chapters ate at the dorms on the weekends. While this might sound very normal to a lot of people, this is out of the norm at Nebraska.
At some point, I think in the 1990's, maybe even the late 1980's, the university took those houses back. Again, I'll reiterate that I haven't really kept up with all the details, so I can only say it all happened in the last 20 years or so. At some point Phi Mu regrouped enough to buy/lease? the Beta Sig house next door to the Kappa House, but they are still a very small chapter compared to the others. Phi Mu and ADPi were always the only chapters that ever had to COR, and probably still are. ADPi appears to have decided to keep the chapter open but operate it more like a local sorority.
I know I've said this before, but you have to understand that Nebraska's greek system is old. Almost all single letter chapters, and they came on campus in the 1880's-turn of the century. ADPi and Phi Mu are johnny-come-latelies in the 1920's and have never really been able to build themselves into the same size chapters as the others. Living in the South, I know this seems upside down to a lot of people, but that's the way it is in Nebraska.

Thanks for the hx, NUBlue - I also remember visiting my sister back when she was in college in the 70's and SAM and ZTA were in that area, also. That is now where they have built the now ever popular apartment housing complex to the south of HSS.
Yes, they are all very old chapters and very well established. They all line a "T" area right in the drive by heart of campus in very stately houses - lots of vines and ivy and English Tudor house - the ones the the dorms just weren't the same.
DD said ADPi would love to have a house but there isn't one there at the present time. What Beta Sig? You mean Beta Sig the Lutheran fraternity? I remember them being in more a dorm area, like where Acacia is in the early 80's. They have started back up again, though. Don't know too much about them these days.

What she said!! People are often surprised to find out how old the greek system is on some of the land grant universities of the old Big 8. Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State have many single letter chapters that have been in continuous existence and are still thriving today. For instance, Kappa Delta, often regarded as a "deep south sorority" has Nu chapter at Oklahoma State and Pi chapter at the University of Nebraska.
I can't imagine the difficulty of an unhoused chapter competing with housed chapters in Lincoln--the houses there are big and beautiful, and the expectation is that everyone lives in for three years. My hat is off to the women of ADPi for their efforts. I wish them well, and hope they have a great recruitment!

Iowa State has quite a few established chapters as well. Mu (now Iowa Gamma) of Pi Beta Phi was founded in 1877, Delta (now Omega Delta) chapter of Delta Delta Delta in 1889, Sigma Sigma chapter of Kappa Delta in 1908, Pi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi in 1911, Rho chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta in 1917 and Omega chapter of Gamma Phi Beta in 1918.

Wow, many, many older chapters at ISU as well--another great school. (I just love the old Big Eight schools...) 1877 is pretty darn old, even for Pi Phi! The change in chapter designation really disguises the seniority of many of these venerable chapters at ISU.

I stand corrected--ADPi was founded before the 1920's. However, I think both ADPi and Phi Mu have had periods where they were gone for a few years and then came back, or got down to a very small size and hung in there unhoused. This means no legacies and no group of alums to look to for support for big blocks of years.
This is what happened to my husband's fraternity, TKE, which was Phi chapter. When we were in college, it was huge. They won intramurals every year, had somebody on homecoming court, SAA, Mortar Board, etc. and they lived in 2 houses on University Terrace (next door to both KD and DG--this was the ZTA house), an annex next to the AXiD house and in the Hotel California on T St. (Yikes!) But they had been on and off campus several times during their history and at that time had no alums of the prime money producing age to help out and within ten years they were gone again.
The good thing is that sororities can keep it going better, especially if they have support from nationals, and it looks like ADPi has decided to work with their situation rather than going away. Good for them!

Beta Sigma Psi lived in what is now the Phi Mu house next door to us. I don't know when they went away. The ZTA house was right next door to the DG house and the TKE house was next door to KD on University Terrace next to Cather Pound. After ZTA left in 1980, TKE moved in there, and stayed in the old house, too. I remember that the dining room had zebra wallpaper and lime green chairs...bold decorating choice!
The SAM house was on the corner of 16th and Vine, across from DU on Vine and AXO on 16th.
Phi Mu and ADPi lived in the two houses directly behind Schramm and Triangle and Chi Phi lived in the houses behind the parking lot lovingly referred to as "Eastern Iowa".
