going greek AFTER finishing community college

This is my first year living in Tallahassee, & I go to TCC. I wanted to rush, but I was bummed when I found out that FSU doesn't allow TCC students to take a class at FSU so that they can rush. (I hope that makes sense. I know that's what UF does, I have a few friends at SF that got to do UF rush.)

Anyway, after watching one of my best friends become a Greek, I know it's something I DEFINATELY want to do. I won't be at FSU until Spring 08, & by then I'll be 20 & in my junior year.

So here are my questions- Is it really okay for me to rush when I finally get to FSU? Would I be considered too old & too far along in school to become Greek? & would it be best to rush right when I get to FSU (spring) or should I wait until fall rush (half way through my jr year)?

I know the kosher response will be something like, "Girls of all ages invited to go Greek." But I'm not sure if that's the honest truth. If anyone can honestly shed light on this for me, it would be GREAT! I'm worried that I missed my chance to go Greek. Thanks for the *future* responses.

definately find out if there will be informal recruitment in the spring of your transfer-most groups are over total(total is the maximum number of members a campus sorority can have) . if a chapter is over total, they cannot recruit new members, except during formal recruitment. fsu holds formal recruitment in the fall.

there may be one or two sororities that will hold informal recruitment in the spring. i would suggest that you sign up for informal recruitment and visit any sorority that is doing informal recruitment. you are coming in at a disadvantage as a junior, so your choices will be less than a freshman or a sophomore . if you wait until fall to rush, you are at more of a disadvantage because you are now a second semester junior and have less time on campus.
you will be more desirable as a junior who has 4 semesters to be on campus, than a junior who has just 3 semesters before she graduates.

there are some sororities at fsu that rarely offer bids to juniors. there are other sororities who are a little less particular about what class the pnm is in(freshman, sophomore, junior). all of the chapters have a lot to offer and you can feel at home, have a good time and be happy in any of them, if you give them a chance.

I am going through the same thing as you are. I already have my AA and want to rush in the fall. I will have more than four semesters at whatever school I will be going to because I am a double major and will need about 150 credit hours minimum to graduate. FSU rush, from what I have heard and friends that I know who go there, is one of the most if not the most competitive rush in the state. I know with me FSU is one of my choices right now to start this fall, but that rush scares me more than anything. I don't mean to sound discouraging and I do hope you rush, but if there is anyway do finish early I would. I will probably rush at FSU if I do go, but I also know realistically I could VERY EASILY end up without a bid. Also I don't know if this would interest you but I do know there are two Christian sororities that are at FSU and still have a selection process and rituals. They are Theta Alpha and Delta Alpha Chi. tcc transfers into fsu are common, and juniors do get bids, but it is not as common as say, sophomores. that said, if you transfer over during spring semester, definitely sign up for informal recruitment. even if you don't get a bid, you'll be better prepared for formal recruitment in the fall.

Would you say that each chapter would probably take or two juniors per pledge class? or a few chapters may take one or two juniors while others will not? I too am curious and would love to know.

A few chapters will take juniors, not all the chapters will do so. Spring recruitment at FSU is quite limited, usually only 2-5 chapters, if that, participating. A lot depends on the number of graduating seniors in December and if that drops a chapter below campus total (120 or 130, I believe).

Do you happen to know how many at FSU accept Juniors or which ones would be great because I am going to be a junior going through recruitment and I dont want to miss out because I dont know which ones will even accept me because I put down the ones that wont.

I don't know how competitive rush is @ FSU, but I joined a sorority @ 20 as a Junior transfer. I love it!

just go in with an open mind and accept as many invitations as you can for each round-in other words maximize your chances.

I would like to correct a statement you made in your orginal post. The University of Florida DOES NOT allow community college students to partake in formal Panhellenic recruitment nor join a GLO prior to attending UF full-time.

Several fraternities at UF, however, have long practiced the intake of SFCC studnets into their chapters. I'm unsure of how they deal with this, but I do know of a particular instance in which the "member" was not a "member" in the eyes of their nationals, until he became a full-time student at UF. I'm assumming your friends who did this at UF are all male?

Best of luck, I hope you decide to rush when you become a student at FSU, their Greek system has an excellent reputation.

You won't be missing out on anything if you go through formal recruitment in the fall-- this is the one time of the year when you have an equal chance to interview with every chapter on campus.

Some chapters will cut you early on due to your class standing or GPA. There is no list of the sorority chapters that take or do not take juniors; this is something that changes year to year depending on the needs of those chapters.
