So, if you have a "textbook" cycle (which almost no one does, it's an average), if you have sex anywhere between day 4 and day 17, you can get pregnant. Where things get sticky is the fact that not every woman ovulates on day 14 - some way before and some way after. Also, 3 days is an average fertility, it could actually be 1 day or 5 days.
BUT, in regards to your period, you would have to be ovulating during your period to actually get pregnant while you are having your period. That would be extremely rare.

What people are saying when they say that "Yes, you can get pregnant during your period" is that say you have sex on day 4 of your period...the sperm lives 10 days, and you ovulate on day 14 (your cycle begins the first day of your period), then you would get pregnant from the sex you had during your period, but you wouldn't GET pregnant while you were having your period.
I am sending this to my husband. I have tried to explain the sperm live for 10 days thing to him multiple times, but he just doesn't get it. He also doesn't understand how due dates are calculated (based on the start of your last period, NOT the date of conception since that is not usually known).

You can calculate from conception, and it's actually more accurate, but you're right, most people don't know their conception date - unless it was a break in a dry spell or a one-night stand.
