Yes, I have heard this and wondered how the both of you can have the same letters. Is it because they are a fraternity or because they are a professional organization?

Sigma Chi was originally named Sigma Phi at its founding. Our founders were unaware that there was already a Sigma Phi fraternity. Shortly after our founding, a rival fraternity (Beta Theta Pi was the prime suspect) broke into their chapter room and stole our constitution/ritual. The founders rewrote the ritual and renamed the fraternity Sigma Chi.

I think that because it is a fraternity and we are a sorority that makes a difference, since the whole name is put into the incorporation papers, i.e., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

The second African American woman to fly into space is a Delta. And as an active member of the sorority, she took our official banner on the shuttle with her.
The first is an AKA--kudos.
Actually there are so many Black women and women firsts that have been accomplished by Deltas and our sistergreeks that this thread could easily reach 100 pages in no time if we started posting them. Our respective websites can give you a peek.
The greatness of the NPHC sororities (and fraternities) is what our foremothers and forefathers accomplished in the times in which they lived. When you start naming those Blacks that were major, nationally known leaders chances are you can attach a membership to an NPHC org. to them.

In IFC Fraternities the letters of the Fraternity name usually represent something special. Why would you assume they are assigned? Look at some of the IFC Fraternity web sites and you will find out how and why they were formed. Of course there is private things that you will not find.
I visited your national website and your founders are probably still alive and I am sure they would be more than happy to talk with you about the meaning of your letters.
The differences between IFC, NPHC and newer organizations is amazing. Do us all a favor try to contact some of your founders and let us know a little more about your story (not your ritual but your history). The more we know about one another the more similarities we will find.

Yes, but look at Beta Theta Pi, their official colors are "delicate shades of pink and blue." That was taken right from the heraldry section of their national website <http://www.betathetapi.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=661&Item id=311>.

Yea, but have you noted that their flag and coat of arms use Red and a darker shade of Blue? I think that’s because the fellow who designed them hated pink (I’m sure an astute Beta can correct me if I‘m wrong on that one, though).

I just got done driving from Northern VA down to Florida and back. I'm always on the lookout for letters on cars. I thought it was interesting out of all GLOs there are, I saw the most Delta Sigma Theta paraphenalia on the road.
Also, I work at The Limited and I always see AKA's and DST's in the store.

Something I always thought was pretty unique about Lambda Chi is that we actually kicked out our founder Warren A. Cole b/c he wouldn’t sign over royalty rights to our badge and other jewelry. His membership was reinstated in the 50’s before his death I believe.
