I believe that Jericho was granted a stay of execution due in part to one of these online petitions. Don't be so sure.

I finally got to watch it on DVR and I have to agree.
I could have done without the cheesy dialogue here and there, but it wasn't the trainwreck I thought it was going to be.
It's satire and a work of fiction. I doubt it'll spell the end of Greek Life altogether.

Yeah, but I think it's the exception in a number of ways.
First, as you say, the online petitions were only part of the viewer response registered at CBS. There were also the 20 tons of peanuts delivered to CBS Headquarters. Second, CBS said that the "digital" response was the largest they had ever seen in response to a cancellation. Which leads to third, the protest in that case was in response to the cancellation of the show, which is quite different from trying to get the show cancelled. I think Axid Angel is exactly right that Married . . . With Children provides a much better of example of how protesting a show may just boost viewership and help keep it on the air longer.
Protest the show too much and watch ABC/ABC Family advertising it by saying "see the show that has so many people talking," and sending the organizers of the protests fruit baskets every Christmas.

NPC has actually started a real petition against this show. If you are interested, I would contact your National HQ, thats where I found out about it.

Really? This is just silly.
If nothing else, this will help get kids interested in greek life who otherwise might not have given it a thought. Most kids are smart enough to know that what is depicted on television is fictional. If we're clear about our organizational culture during recruitment, most kids will be just fine.
If public perception about GLOs changes due to some show on ABC Family, then it's clear that we're not doing enough on our own to positively affect our public image on our own.
I really think this is a mistake. By giving this show any attention whatsoever, we simply help to make it more relevant.

The Medical profession sure didn't take a hit after Scrubs started (although my aunt, who has been an RN for 30 years swears that it's more realistic than any other "medical" program)....I think of this the same way.

And the protesting groups risk making themselves look like they're riding on a very high horse. That's how it will be perceived and reported -- if anyone notices to begin with.

I watched the first episode and I wouldn't say that it has risen to the level of an all out protest - yet. After Sorority Life, this is a cake-walk.

I think a lot of people got interested in sororities after Sorority Life because they WEREN'T the stereotype a lot of people had of sororities.
at any rate....
NPC certainly does seem to be speaking on behalf of all of its members a heck of a lot lately - even if all the members don't hold the same opinion. Just saying is all.

I haven't seen any coverage of the NPC letter, so I imagine it's really somewhat of a non-issue as far as influencing public opinion.
Compared to the Depauw debacle, this is nothing. And I hope and pray that most of THAT is behind us.

i love this show. so many things about it are so on-the-money right....and then there is just enough stretch that it is hilarious.

I don't see what the big deal is. The show is MUCH better than I thought it would be.
Besides, this show won't last more than 2 seasons, if that much. How many more storylines can they think of that are "greek" before they rehash?

Tri Delta's response to the new TV series "GREEK."
GREEK TV Series - July 9
Tri Delta's response to ABC Family's new show, "GREEK."
Since early this year, we have been in close contact with entertainment reporters and producers of the upcoming "GREEK" series, and have offered Tri Delta as a resource for future story lines and segment plots that are more positive and representative of the Tri Delta sorority experience. We know that many of you have seen promotional trailers for the series, have visited the "Virtual Rush" show Web site, or have heard about the show through word-of-mouth. As a proactive organization, Tri Delta Executive Office staff and our PR firm are closely monitoring the marketing of the show and will track the topics covered in each episode, and are prepared and ready to respond as necessary.

GREEK TV Series - July 10
Fraternity President Michelle Shimberg shares her thoughts on the pilot episode of "GREEK."
After viewing the pilot episode of “Greek”, Fraternity President Michelle Shimberg shared brief thoughts with members of the press. An experpt is included below.
"'Greek' may make for good TV, but it's a far cry from reality for the vast majority of our members. Women who participate in that kind of superficial and 'mean girl' behavior are totally missing out on the true sorority experience."
Tri Delta’s Executive Office staff and PR firm will continue to monitor show plotlines and promotion.

I definitely agree. There's a lot of bitching and moaning going on in some of the LJ communities I read (including the AGD one) and I just don't understand why people are making such a big deal about it.
You're right on about the 2 seasons. I watch ABC Family all the time and I can't think of any ABC Family Original Series that lasted more than 2 or 3 seasons.
The show isn't that bad. I see worse in collegian Facebook and MySpace profiles.
