It was designed to lock into wifi signals because the fact of the matter is that usually you can find a signal everywhere you go and because wifi uses much less energy and isn't a battery drain like 3G. On top of that 3G is expensive. Nobody pays for the service because of that expense. When it comes out in Europe they say it may link to the 3G networks because costs are lower there. So the speed thing is BS. It works great at loading internet pages.
And I'm not understand the 6 clicks thing. Making calls was really easy from my playing with it.
The only thing that's negative right now to me is the storage capacity. Nothing is perfect, but there are tons of positive reviews about it such as the one in the NYTimes and most people agree it's a great product.

here are the early reviews:

The capacity issue is what has me hung up. If they're able to have 60GB iPods at about that same size, I don't see what's keeping them from doing it now other than the fact that they want to be able to sell us something later as an upgrade.
As for the WiFi being everywhere, Rudey, maybe in larger cities. While it's pretty much everywhere in downtown OKC, where I live, that's not a very large area at all. I'd assume most mid-size cities like OKC are similar in that regard.
The monthly cost thing would be about the same for me. Do you get to keep your rollover minutes in an iPhone plan?

Why wouldn't they? My BB is AT&T and mine roll-over.
- Unless they figure the people who run out and get iphones the day they come out have too much disposable income in the first place and really wouldn't mind not getting the roll-over minutes.

with that logic, will people who get iPhone later on eventually get rollover minutes? if the product is as big a hit as the iPod (and maybe not cause there are already similar products out there), there were future generations, and potentially cheaper and more affordable for the masses (well the target market masses). so... do i get rollover minutes if i buy an iPhone, say, a year from now? 2 years? hmm...

Are you going to be walking around downtown OKC and watching a feature length movie on your iphone? Not likely because most people don't use it to watch long videos, most people don't need heavy bandwidth while walking around and usually screw around with something like that in the office. And really if OKC is not technologically advanced I see no point in complaining that someone hasn't made a technologically advanced phone for the 2 people that might demand one.

If you don't have the money for this phone that's fine. Most people don't have that kind of cash laying around and it's scary to think you'd be at a club and lose an expensive phone just like that. But it seems like you're out on an anti-iphone crusade.

I don't know.. I could definitely see myself watching the news or something at lunch, or doing something to keep me occupied when I'm early for a meeting or something.

Yeah.. I could explain what the holdup on that is, but no one but me cares
The internet companies are very protective of their duopoly. We'll just leave it at that. Muni wifi has been on the table for some time now. I imagine it's going to stay that way.
What intrigues me the most about iPhone is how open the software might be? I'm wanting an easy to use cell phone that I can get to sync with my firm's telephones. Everyone has PDA's, but most still print their schedule off of the docketing software and carry around paper calendars with them. Technology 'round these parts is a hard sale. That has nothing to do with the city and everything to do with the way lawyers are.

You'd probably watch "the news" in an office with wifi as opposed to walking around the street hoping there's wifi. Plus if you did watch "the news" you'd drain the battery in a second.
Not sure what you mean by open software. The software for other platforms is much more developed if that's what you're looking for...
