Also TSteven - thanks for your response but I was asking more along the lines of how should I go about contacting alumni for recs? What are the steps for this process?

I would first start by asking your current teachers, high school teachers, mentors at your church or synagogue, friends of your family, etc. Also contact the Alumnae Panhellenic in your area to find out if they have a recruitment info session.

Also, check the post I made a page or two back and I mentioned the two local alumnae panhellenics. The Overlake one has a sorority forum every spring but it's directed to high school seniors going to in state colleges.

Another quick question - like I previously stated I do volunteer work on my own, but do you think it would be beneficial to join a Junior League? I am researching options and it looks like there ia a junior League of Seattle that is right around the corner from where I live.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Junior League isn't something you can just "join." JL is a selective organization. Some JL's require you to have a "sponsor" in the chapter for you to be considered. Also, joining would depend on whether the group is even taking new members at this time.
I personally wouldn't bother because you are planning on moving and joining JL is not an instant thing. It could take awhile.

I think you may be too young to join Junior League, not to mention if you are leaving town for school, you won't be there long enough for the probationary period, training, etc. that goes along with JL, not to mention the cost.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but regarding the JL-- they don't recruit yearround, once you are in, it takes roughly a year to progress from provisional membership to full membership. As others have said, some JLs require sponsorship, the dues are expensive and most won't let you join if you are under 21 (I think NYC is the exception, and a few others).
School starts in a few months. Any volunteer work you do in the next two months will look like resume padding.
I recommend that you spend your time preparing for your move to your new school and all the things you need to do that go along with that... and enjoying your summer.
