If it's done simply by credits, that's weird. I had more than 12 credit hours prior to starting college after passing AP exams and CLEP exams. Would I then be eligible for NPHC membership as a first semester freshman? Hypothetically, of course!

Yep, 24 semester hours, 36 quarter hours. So yes it has been done "freshman" year when someone entered college during the summer, and/or had high school AP credits rransferred and received the number of hours as a second semester "freshman". More likely on a semester system than a quarter system, because of timing.

As 12dn said depending on the org. But for Delta no, you would have needed 24 semester credits PLUS the GPA requirement. And to get a GPA you would have needed to attend at least one semester of college to establish one on the official transcript. So even with the credits, you would not have been remotely eligible until second semester freshman year.

Yes, for those that require 12 credits, if they are doing intake in the Fall instead of the Spring. But you would also have to have the GPA requirement, which is also possible.
But then you would generally need to have a presence on the campus, which would get you overlooked by some since you were just a first semester freshman.
A lot of us were eligible freshman year but I think it's a really good idea to wait (for whatever reasons you have to wait).

Fall 1994, first semester of my freshman year.
Rush started before classes, but after freshmen move-in, but bid day was after classes had begun.

Pledged my sophomore year, after transferring. I didn't go through rush at my first school because I was a DRAMA MAJOR and DRAMA MAJORS didn't rush. I had a friend who was a Zeta, and was going to go through informal rush, but then Chi O found out I was a legacy, and made some fuss about calling ZTA on rush infractions because of the time I spent at their house - it was a big mess, so I didn't go through my freshman year. I switched majors and colleges, and pledged my beloved G Phi B fall 1983 (I'll be a 25 yr. member in January!)

You were a legacy to ZTA or Chi Omega?
