LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was let out of jail and put under house arrest on Thursday after serving three days of a three-week sentence, sparking a debate over whether fame worked for her or against her.
Officials said Hilton, 26, a symbol for many of the privilege and excesses of American celebrity culture, was released from jail for undisclosed medical reasons but was fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet to track her movements and ordered confined to her house for the next 40 days.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Paris Hilton was let out of jail Thursday morning, days after she began serving what was to have been a 45-day sentence for violating probation, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
Hilton must wear a monitoring bracelet and remain at her home for another 40 days, said sheriff's department spokesman Steve Whitmore.
Medical considerations "played a part" in the decision to offer Hilton home confinement for the remainder of her sentence, Whitmore said. (

He said privacy rules prohibited him from giving details about the medical issues, but celebrity Web site TMZ.com earlier quoted sources saying Hilton was refusing to eat much of the jail food served her.

Paris Hilton finds herself longing for the 12-foot-by-8-foot cell in
Century Regional Detention Facility that was her home for three days and nights, the hotel heiress probably won't have a hard time finding a cozy-yet-comfortable space to pass the 40 days remaining on her home confinement.
Somewhere in Prison Hilton — the 2,707-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bath luxury hideout nestled on a tree-lined street in
West Hollywood to which she's been "transferred" — the celebutante might find a hot tub or two of comparable size.
That's not to say she won't have tough times in the $2 million Mediterranean-style manse.
