i was #11!!! and to make matters worse, our valedictorian cheated her way thru high school, got a full scholarship to v.tech, and then dropped out of college because she was failing (her mom basically did everything for her in high school )...thanks for wasting that spot!

nope, definitely not in top 10 class rank, and i think i just barely made it in top 25%.
everything was SO competitive [example: teachers telling us if you don't get a 1300 on the SAT you would be NOTHING (this was back in the day when the highest score was 1600). You might as well sign up to be a janitor after graduation if you don't go to an Ivy League school, or at least a highly ranked private college. And HBCU??? What are those??? ]
Although it might not have been the smartest move, I consciously made a decision to be "well rounded" rather than the super nerd up I had been until about 10th grade. i joined a bunch of activities and had friends and still made pretty good grades... but nothing remarkable b/c i went to school with a bunch of spoiled cheating overachievers. LOL.

Reason: edited to add most of those spoiled cheating overachievers were also STRESSED OUT by the time they got to college. Oh well!!!

Did you go to high school with me? lol I hated that school so much that i tried to get kicked out. i purposely didn't do a lick of work my freshman year, failed everything. the school honestly thought i wasn't able to handle the course work. my parents had a trick for me though, they made me spend the summer in tutoring.

Slightly off topic, but noteworthy of mention:
My #20 ranking was considering the fact that I intentionally let my GPA drop to a 2.4 my junior year from a 3.1 in prior years (I'm surprised it was still in the top 15% after that) because I was trying to "dumb myself down" b/c I wanted to be seen as a "normal" student and not a "nerd".
Fortunately, FWIW, I came to my senses, said to heck with everyone else, and pulled a 3.5 and acheived like I was supposed to do. (I had a 3.8 the first grading period---all As and one B, the best grades I had in all the 12 years of schooling).
I never made National Honor Society--I always considered that org for "squares" and the social climbing suck-ups. The Kitty Hawk Air Society was all I needed.

I realized it was a no-win situation; I was an ROTC cadet, and therefore a nerd by default, and I wasn't quitting ROTC for nobody; I loved it too much. As a matter of fact, I moved halfway through my junior year, and was supposed to attend another school--uh, not a chance! I had a little holla with the principal and he helped keep me at my original school for ROTC without having to go through any lottery programs or any other nonsense like that.
When I got promoted to C/2Lt. on May 17, 1990, it was like crossing the sands to a frat, I felt like I had "arrived. But I digress...
FWIW, I made Homecoming King, which set a major precedent (perhaps the only instance) in that I was an ROTC cadet and was never involved in any athletic activities; my thing was strictly ROTC and entertainment (read: choir and drama club).
Hope this helps.

Wasn't top 10%, but I had a 3.7 GPA. That was almost ten years ago. Dang, time flies.

My parents THREATENED me with tutoring my freshman year when i was making "good" grades... but then when i dropped to making "O.K." grades they left me alone. WEIRD parents... but i guess everything worked out well. or averaged well enough.

come on yall im at work! i cant even giggle man withouth it being looked at funny.
i was #4 out of 120. the 3 above me, we were all friends... until the rankings came out. senior year was pretty interesting... seeing as how the guy in the #3 spot was an uber cheater all 4 years (guess it paid off - full scholarship to Brown), #2 went to some local random college (she was the only one who was actualy smart but her mom wanted her close to home) and #1, well she pulled a suicide and only applied to Columbia cause she was SO sure she'd get in.
well, she got waitlisted. and she became a total b!tch and had every teacher, incl. the principal to write letters to admissions. which didnt really work. and then word got around that her father didnt have the $ for Columbia anyway... so she went to St. John's, which is a great school, for NYC anyway. but all sorts of ppl went to STJ from my high school, incl. this girl who graduated with 2 kids and wasnt ever really a poster child of academic excellence. so she felt kinda shamed by that i guess?
anyway, she's now a Theta Phi Alpha and i figured hey! she's greek too! and tried to get in touch with her, and her big was like "oh, ill pass her info to you but she's not good with returning phone calls."
so yeah. but i digress.

I graduated in the top 10% of my class #23 out of 280+. I was also a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, voted "Best ALL AROUND" by my Senior Class, and Homecoming Queen along with my then boyfriend/now hubby as the King
