Yeah it goes both ways. If you want Elizabeth to be an adventurer, you can think of her as such. If you prefer the point of view that she did all of that pirate stuff so that she could be with Will, save Jack since she killed him, help Will help his father, etc. then you can see her living quite comfortably for once.
As for the second bit it's hard to say. He can only touch land every 10 years, however it's not clear that she could never be on board the Dutchman or he on another ship. Davy Jones wasn't doing his duty of ferrying the dead to the afterlife (which is not necessarily the Locker, that's more of a private hell Jones used to hang on to people's souls.) So perhaps if he's actually doing his job, Will can't really spend much time amongst the living at sea.

Will's father made a mention about how she can't go where they are going so he has to make the most of his 1 day on land every 10 years.

Yeah, and I think that goes into the fact that Will's actually doing the job, instead of dicking around scaring people like Davy Jones was.

Is that why Davy Jones turned into a "monster?" I was very confused by the movie and probably missed a lot of details. I do remember Calypso telling somebody that "him was a man once." But I don't think I picked up on how he got the octopus face. Of course, I didn't even really understand the whole Calypso thing, so maybe I'm just completely clueless.

Yes, that's why he was all with the tentacles, as was everyone on board the ship. Will won't get all fishy and neither will the crew (I have to assume there are still sailors who are afraid to die who will crew his ship)
I think it was discussed when Jack was considering taking the job himself. He, or someone else, made some comment about not looking good with the tentacles.

Um..yea...Was I the only other one that didn't understand the Calypso thing at all? They had to sing the song at the start of the movie to get her to come back even though she was alreay there? And then what good did she do after they released her? She caused a big thunderstorm? I didn't understand her part very much? Anyone care to enlighten me?

The thing that I understood was that they were singing the song about Calypso to get the Breveren(sp?) to get together.

The song being song was a pirate song that called the Brethren (the pirates) together. Calypso doesn't actually have anything to do with the song itself.
The Brethren were called because of the terrible conditions that the pirates were suffering under the East India Trading Co.
Quote:
The King and his men stole the Queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones.
The seas be ours and by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam.
Yo ho, haul together, hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars, never shall we die!
|
Calypso was bound by the Nine Pirate Lords at their first meeting. Davy Jones was pissed that she ldid not wait for him (as being fickle is in her nature). The Pirate Lords agreed, likely because the sea is a harsh enough mistress without having to worry about a goddess being pissed off at you.
Barbossa wanted to relase Calypso, expecting her favor in return. However, that's not how the sea, nor a sea goddess, works. She was just damned pissed off, hence the maelstrom. (Also, I think that Barbossa just loves the sea, did you see the look on his face while steering the Pearl into the whirlpool? His third motivation would be recompense for Calypso/Tia Dalma's resurrecting him.)
Phew. Hope that helps. I think they left her storyline too open, but if you take into consideration that sailors both love and fear the sea you can understand the character they were creating for her.

Reason: Making sure I spell Tia Dalma's name right, she's not one to piss off.

I didn't even understand the song sung at the beginning had anything to do with Calypso/Tia Dalma until I was listening to the soundtrack this weekend. I feel kind of stupid. he he.

We finally saw it last night! I'd heard both positive and negative but I loved it and I really really adore Jack Sparrow's Theme. My daughter is going to teach me the dance that her high school dance team performed to it.
I'm still not sure if we should have taken our younger kids (7, 10, 11). Something scared our youngest daughter and she cut one loudly in the almost empty theater...the other families there turned around and stared at us.
Has anyone heard anything concrete about a 4th one?
