I've never heard such things about DZ nor never seen anyone haranguing you for it.

The poster who PM'd you is either ridiculously inactive on GC or using a sockpuppet. Quite brave of her to hide behind another name for such an "old poster who never posts" anymore with her *12 posts* I'm so glad she's taking the "fall" and being "nice" with her diatribe. She also went back and delted her posts, she's down to 3 now and edited a 2005 post in March of 07.

She sounds like one of those people who think being in the "top three" at an SEC school is the only way to be Greek. And quite Classy of her to write you a long post about it.

Also, feel free to brag about your daughter as much as you would like. Bragging about one chapter on campus does not imply the rest of them suck. We all know you're a dad of a DZ, we expect to hear about DZ from you.

Yeah, it's Teh Cult. Made in mockery of a long banned member who believed that anyone who agreed with majority opinion about her was obviously not thinking for themselves and just buying into the safety of the GC cult we had going on.

Stunned...

I can't even begin to express how I feel about that post. I really am nearly speechless. While I try to write off people like this, the fact that this person went to this amount of effort is remarkable and even though I know that there is no foundation in ANYTHING she has said, it is extremely hurtful to read it and know there are probably others out there who believe it as well. How sad it must be for her to feel like this would have had any kind of positive impact, like there was some "great secret" no one was telling you. Apparently she didn't tell the over 180,000 collegiate and alumnae members of Delta Zeta either. I can only imagine what they would say to her should they read what she said and have an opportunity to meet her on the street.

While everyone on GC has their own opinion about what has happened at DePauw, not once have I read about any of them asserting that this was a sorority-wide issue. In fact, most posts have made an effort to point out that this was a relatively isolated incident and that to apply it to Delta Zeta as a whole would be wrong. For this person to go out of her way to disrespect an entire sorority and state things that are completely false is beyond me.

I am thrilled that your daughter is my sister. I am thrilled about ALL of my sisters regardless of where they were members or what they look like.

Thank you for supporting the sorority your daughter loves so much...

In the Flame,
DZRose

Considering the redundancyof that PM, the poster could have said everything she had to say in two paragraphs.

To me, she is the one who looks stupid.

BamaDad, don't sweat it. I'm a HowardMom and proud of my daughter's choice of sorority, too.

re: Bairds Manual:

"This book was last published in 1991, so the information is still very current."
http://www.greekpages.com/resources/bairds.html

While the book is very comprehensive, with chapters opening and closing all over North America, I wouldn't think of it as "current".

And BamaDadDZ, I liked hearing about how much fun your daughter is having. It reminds me a bit of justamom's posts about her daughter being a DG at LSU. (we miss justamom!)

DZBamaDad (and anyone else fed up with GC),

Something to think about before you leave GC for good:
Do you want people (especially potential new members and their parents) who come to GC for information about Greek life to see a site full of venomous, petty, unfounded tripe like the PM you received? Or, would you rather they have access to plenty of well-thought and -expressed, enthusiastic, and experience-based posts such as yours?

I've always believed that you can only effect change FROM WITHIN a system you think is flawed (if the system has any value to you at all, and I understand if GC is of no value to you now). The internet has given voice and distribution to vitriolic, short-sighted, threatened individuals. Sadly, for whatever reason, that draws human attention much more than positivity and enthusiasm, or even respectful critical debate. And the attention feeds the psyche/need-for-attention of the vitriolic, so the cycle persists.

In my opinion, we can only combat it with volume and our own experiences. It's an uphill battle, but many of us in the Greek world think it's worthy.

BamaDad, I think it is fantastic that you are so supportive of your daughter and the home she found with DZ. My parents were not as supportive of me when I went Alpha Gam, and I only wish they had offered me that support in the beginning (things are much better now). Please keep posting! It is great to see encouraging, proud parents on GC

To see how ridiculous her comments are, all you have to do is Google DZ and see all of the great chapters at big schools, including LSU where they have made quota for 44 years. I grew up in Baton Rouge and always heard good things about the chapter at LSU, one of the most competitive greek systems out there. That being said, a sorority is surely about more than the number of pretty, popular members and the strength of it's national reputation. I don't think anyone would discount the sisterhood in smaller sororities. Sorry we can't all be in "the top tier!" Your daughter obviously found what she was looking for in a sorority, and that's all that matters!

Regarding the comments about DZ in the PM..... I agree with DSTCHAOS.

But seriously.....BamaDad.... Dave....I value your opinions and appreciate your insight. But do you really have to announce that your daughter is a Delta Zeta at 'Bama in all of your posts? I think people here can appreciate you for you. PLENTY of people are not members of GLOs on this site.

If you want to be a member of GC, then be a member. But don't expect any sympathy because you received a PM that you didn't like.

Have your own identity and post away!

(Also, for safety and privacy reasons, I seriously wouldn't harp on the fact that your daughter is a Bama DZ.)

I've seen a lot of childish and mean-spirited behavior on GC, but that message takes the cake. It's absolutely disgusting!

Anyone with a clear understanding of the history of the NPC knows that Delta Zeta has many closed chapters because it has absorbed the most groups. It's as simple as that. Delta Zeta is a wonderful organization and it's been so nice to see such a devoted parent proudly posting about his daughter. You have every right and reason to be proud.

It's obvious to me that 'kaikey' is one of a small group of GCers (I don't mean 'teh cult' because I don't think they are behind this) who think that being part of "old line" groups at Bama is the end-all and be-all. There is so much more to Greek life than status. I can only pity those who think otherwise. I don't know DZ's reputation at that school and, frankly, it doesn't matter. Finding a home in a sorority where you are surrounded by sisters who love you is what is most important.

BamaDad, I hope you will disregard that petty message and listen to the rest of us who have enjoyed your presence here on Greekchat and have nothing but respect for Delta Zeta.

I, for one, don't understand this. Can someone break it down for me?

My issue with the PM he received is that the individual presented her statements as some sort of commonly accepted fact, rather than as her own opinion.

(Obviously what anyone says in a post should be interpreted as opinion, but the writer did try to assert her "opinion" as "fact." That was what I found to be offensive about it.)

DZ had absorbed a lot of smaller sororities in the past. Some of them had chapters at campuses that had DZ so the chapters merged, but it looks like they closed chapters when it was more of a merging of the chapters...at least that is how I understand it.

Hmmm..... interesting.

So, if two chapters merged on one campus, there would be a brand new chapter name?
