Well first off you'd get in trouble from the advisory board for even planning an overnight. Second off, everyone has to get on the bus (multiple trips) there, and would then have to get on the bus going back. It's possible that you could hide and get a room yourself or something and avoid the bus, but then you're stuck without transportation or even a change of clothes. It's just easier to go back home. Plus we always had them at really nice hotels that you generally didn't want to pay for. And if you got caught, you'd go to standards.

Our chapter's policy was not to assess beyond dues, so we didn't charge for formal. We didn't want to put people in the position of not being able to afford it. We did school busses or, when we were really broke, just booked it close and walked.

Girls have a double standard...can't really do things the way the boys do.

Sometimes I think it's a little much. I guess it's better safe than sorry, but if we're morally opposed to staying overnight or something what about members that go to fraternity formals?

I wish we could. I have so much fun with my sisters at formal but going to Gatlinburg (DX fall every year) is 10x's more fun. And a lot of the chapters do it at the beach...kinda beats three hours at a student retreat.

When I was active we weren't allowed to even have it at a hotel. I was upset because the few times I planned it, I wanted to have it at this one hotel (Dearborn Inn). Now that they take the bus I'm not sure how the rules have changed. Some girls were jealous that the other sorority on campus goes to Niagara Falls or London, Ontario for their formals, but looking at it in monetary terms, a lot of our girls wouldn't have been able to go. I liked our $60/couple formals versus paying a hundred or so for a weekend.

If I recall correctly, when I was a collegiate I think there was something in the Gamma Phi policies about not allowing overnights at hotels after formal. Sometimes we took buses to formal, but not always because we were a "dry" campus and therefore no one was allowed to drink (not even the 21+) at organization functions. So after a while taking the bus seemed ridiculous.

She might be asking all this because the Tri Sigmas had their formal this past weekend. Since I seriously doubt she's a new member (Jocelyn i PM'ed you), then she didn't get to go to the formal, and is probably wondering what she missed out on

Read the whole thread. She's definitely not a new member. I PMed you about the whole fiasco.

We always rented hotel suites back then. We'd get ready at the rooms with our dates, cab it to campus (usually the pick up and drop off point), ride the bus, party at formal, get dropped off at school, then cab it back to Waikiki. Campus-Waikiki was usually only $10 each way per car divided by however many we fit in the cab. After we got back to Waikiki, we'd club it or continue the party at the suite. They couldn't dictate what we could and couldn't do before we stepped on the bus and after we got off it.

It was a fun, safe way to for all of us to party together, especially since we all live in different parts of the island.
