....if I stated in a thread that I wouldn't accept a black man into my fraternity because he was black........you would have an absolute shit fit. I can't even imagine how many times you would pull the "shows your true colors" "you're a bigot/racist/etc" crap that you do on a regular basis.

I agree, and frankly, I find it rather sad. Frankly it sounds like a lot of these "race-based" no votes are done solely to spite and power-trip. Yes, they can vote whichever way they wish for their own personal reasons they may have, but that doesn't make them any more right then those that shut their ancestors out of mainstream orgs for those same reasons.

Nevertheless, it’s a good point. Frankly, If an IFC member were to say that the first thought that would jump into a lot of minds would be “you racist bastard,” and rightly so. Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever gets to the “not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” part of the I have a dream speech; or perhaps that courtesy should only go one way? But I digress.

I can’t imagine how such racism can be condoned in any such context. I have to say though, I’m certainly glad my brothers weren’t so bigoted as to vote against me because of race. But then again, I know they’re all better than that sort of nonsense.

dang...took the words out of my mouth....
Let's take this one step further....unless someone knows something I don't...when the votes come down, you have no way of knowing why u did or didn't make line...that is up for the committee and last I checked, I don't think that is public record as to why certain individuals didn't make it in no one owes you an explanation for jack, either try again next year or go elsewhere...and I would also hope that any org. has enough discretion to keep Greek biz...Greek biz....
that needs no explanation

You think so? given the context which includes a line about black and white children holding hands, I don’t think its a stretch by any means. Plus I’m only talking about votes based solely on race ( and by that let me be clear: I mean skin color exclusively and not any behaviors stereotypically associated with race, assuming such behaviors have been exhibited by the candidate in question.

Yes I think it is stretching it. We aren't talking about someone not being able to live in a particular neighborhood, hiring practices, or having the ability to an equal education as others. We are talking about a preference to have who you want in your particular private organization. To me it's not about the color of their skin but in my opinion the inability to comment themselves to causes that affect the black community with not just empathy but true understanding. For instance someone mentioned earlier that things are much better than during the civil rights movement. Well that right there is an issue for me. I don't discount the fact that my situation is better than my grandparents or even my parents, but I also recognize we have a long way to go as a people in terms of equality. When I look at the disparities of children in care, black men in the prison system, blacks receiving longer sentences for the same crime as their white peer, and the disparities of the number of black children living in poverty; I know we are overrepresented it disproportionate numbers in all of those systems and many others I understand we are far from the movement and work being older. I don't think most white people get that racism exist; the rather focus on that things aren't as bad as they were in the civil rights movement. I was born in '70, I'm not that far removed from the civil rights movement, heck I remember growing up in NC and knowing there were certain places I was not welcomed and you know what I'm still not welcomed there. I just question is whites can see the experiences that come with race as a person of color.

Actually I wouldn't care and I think it would be your right to vote who you want into your organization.

actually, personally i could care less. that's YOUR fraternity. now if you did that as someone who makes hiring decisions for a company, then it would apply. as it is, i don't give two hoots.
