I wish our school would establish a policy over-riding NPC so we could wait until after semester grades came out for initiation. I'm so EFFEN TIRED of giving my secrets to girls who end up flunking out because they were too busy to study and make grades.

How number one do you give Your secrets to women who were not Initiated?
But, you may recruit them with high hopes. but if they do not make their grades then, they are out. That is a huge part of being a member of a GLO isn't? Held above the norm.

um......okay. I guess I'll write this kindergarten style.
I WISH that my SCHOOL would implement a policy that would require GRADES prior to initiation!
But it doesnt. So instead, we have the typical 5-8 week new member period that NPC requires.
So if a girl joins in August and Initiates in October but doesnt get grades until December.....
So she is Initiated in October, and we give her our secrets. Then grades come out in December and DAMN, she's on academic probation. SO THEN if she doesnt get thm up within the set time she's allotted, then she gets her membership revoked...
Again...AFTER...she's already been given the secrets.
Did I spell it out good enough this time?
The point is, some schools require grades prior to allowing them to initiate. If these girls didnt make grades, then they woudlnt initiate. and if they didnt get their grades up, they would be forced to depledge, rather than being initiated, hence saving our secrets from girls too lazy to make good grades.

Yeeeeeah. I tried bringing that subject up at our last panhellenic meeting and I swear a million daggers went through me from the glares of the girls in the room.
When your campus has a total of 20 women who are greek...the problem is, you HAVE to pledge them their first semester, otherwise, the likelyhood that they will still be interested in joining by spring semester is slim to none. We've lost alot of girls who said they wanted to wait - and completely changed their minds. I agree that forcing them to wait could be detrimental to our campus. But I wish the campus would institute the grade policy to over-ride NPC.

OOPS, sorry I did not spell as you wished.
I do not care for the way my GLO does it either, but they say it is alright to do on the mid-term slips that are available from the Greek Office.
Time seems to be money for the chapter and the National.
But, again if you lose that person with the secrets then what? Is that what you were refering to?

Um. I was referring to lazy @$$ girls who initiate and then decide they dont care about grades, so then they get kicked out. I want to Initiate girls who are actually going to be around for a while. We have had too many girls who act one way at recruitment, had good grades in HS, get to college party too much, dont go to class, get pissed off when we implement study hours, and then they dont make grades. I'm tired of lazy girls.
Okay, this was not meant to be a thread hi-jacking. Soooo back to regularly scheduled topic.
Give the stuff back. All of it. In my chapter, you sign a contract saying you'll do so in the event you deploedge or suspend membership, or are forced to suspend membership. And yes, we too, go knocking on doors demanding our stuff back.

I don't see why you're worried about people loosing interesting in Greek life in one semester. Those are the kind of people you don't want in your group anyway. If they're not gung-ho about going greek, at least enough to want to rush after a semester of waiting, they're probably not going to be good members anyway.

You're absolutely right. I agree 100% with you. But the other 19 greek women on my campus don't. And since greek life for women on my campus is still in a rebuilding stage (There were 3 - yes, three active greek women in the other sorority on my campus prior to our colonization) we have to do what we can to appeal to the girls. And unfortunately, that means we have to do things a little bit differently than we necessarily want to. Meaning that greek life for women would NOT survive on a campus of 22% female population if we implemented deferred rush.

I wonder if that would work? That is, I wonder if the school saying "you may not initiate women until they have so and so college GPA" would fly with your respective HQs?
It's a good idea, IMO.

I was under the impression that it was THE only way to get out of a 5-8 week period - that it was school policy to wait for grades. I KNOW I have read about some school's on here that do that, and get away with it. I have no clue who they were, though.

In most cases, I could really see this working, as it seems that most HQs would rather comply with the demands of the university rather than loose their chapter on that campus. However, in this case, we're talking about a chapter of 10 women. If the university started demanding things from the HQ, they might shrug and say "Meh, 10 women...let's just let that chapter go...".

A friend of mine is a Chi Omega and she said that it's Chi Omega's policy not to initiate new members until after that semester's grades were in- so the fall class would be initiated at the very beginning of second semester.

But in our case....we chartered with 7. HQ knew what kind of campus we were when they installed us.....

While Nationals have ideas, we as GLOs are on campus at their will.
So, if the School dictates the time of new membership, then they will rule!
So, ergo, we have to work with in those rules.
