I work at a large, Midwestern university, and everyone is in complete shock about the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Students are crowded around computers and televisions trying to get the most recent information. This hits a little too close to home for our students, faculty and staff. This is so unfair. Thoughts and prayers for the entire VT campus, community and all of those who are affected by this horrible event.

this is so awful, the moment i heard i messaged my brother, because as luck would have it, two weeks ago the phi psi chapter at vtech took a road trip to his chapter. they had a blast, and he was really excited about all the new friends he'd made. now he's waiting for them to message back to tell him they're safe.
thoughts and prayers go out to everyone, vtech students, people who have friends at vtech, everyone. this is horrendous.
my entire class was in shock when they heard. and the pictures are horrendous.

One of the young men featured in the photos that appeared on the home page of many of the news sites yesterday is the nephew of my high school librarian, apparently. He was shot three times...the first time in the leg (which is the most serious injury), then in the behind and shoulder when the shooter came back to the classroom five minutes later.

It was very heroic of the professor who survived the Holocaust to give up his life to save others. It is remarkable. It shows true heroism and courage. He escaped, lived a long and rich life, and now allowed others to live. Amazing.
My school already asked everyone to enter their cell phone numbers, so that they can text us in case there is an emergency like that. There is also a condolence message from the president.

That's an interesting way for your school to handle something like this. So many people change numbers so often, or don't use text messages, that I'm not sure how effective it might be in the long run though.

we have a similar system that was just implemented, and a big long email about emergency preparedness just went out from the president:
In the event such a catastrophe befell the W____ community, we would provide multiple sources of information: via the Internet, voicemail, email, and personal communication. In addition to posting emergency messages on the University website and broadcasting these messages to the campus community via email and voicemail, we would contact students on their personal telephones and cell phones, using a new remote system that would enable us to reach them even if all campus systems were
inoperable. We also would work through the Residential Life staff to get the word out in person.

No, that threat in Austin happened yesterday around midday, if I recall correctly.
