When my friend Erica needed someone to sublet her apartment, she posted flyers on campus and asked all her friends to ask around for her. She ended up subletting to a friend of a friend. I've also seen people send mass messages through facebook about subletting, but that can be obnoxious.

When I have friends that need someone to sublet, they usually just tell all their friends, put it on their AIM profile, etc etc. I know we have one "need a roommate" message board on campus also, but I've heard it doesn't work really well. Word of mouth works the best in my experience.
I had wonderful luck with roommates.com in finding roommates in both DC and CA. It worked out really well and I still keep in touch with all of my old roomies, even though I no longer live in those states!!!
