Yep, I say pop. However, I will always ask for a diet Coke in a restaurant. I prefer Coca-Cola products.

By Canadian law, the wait staff are supposed to say, "is Pepsi (or alternative Pepsi product such as 7-Up instead of Sprite) alright?" if they do not serve Coca-Cola products. Something about false advertising.

Like at our party yesterday; someone comes in the kitchen, and I say, "Do you want a Coke?" They say yes, and I open the fridge. "What do you want -- Co-Cola, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke with Splenda?"

My fiance says soda, even though he grew up here and has lived in the South his whole life. I fail to understand it, and it drives me bonkers.
You TN people are weird. My father has been living there for like a bijillion years and now he says Coke instead of soda. Mountain Dew is not a coke. Pepsi is not a Coke. Actually, a Diet Coke is not a Coke, it's a Diet Coke.

Soda I say, Soda!

Funny...I was just corrected on this over the weekend.

I'm from Miami...we've always called it "soda."

Now that I live in Seattle (today marks one year!), I'm told it's "pop."

It's strange for me to say "pop" in referring to soda - that's what we called my grandfather!

Oh well, don't feel weird. I'm a Seattle native that grew up with "pop" but after being in Calif. for four years, I now say "soda"...even though I've moved back to Seattle.

I've always just called it what it is-a coke is a coke, pepsi is pepsi, etc. I never used the terms soda or pop when asking for a drink.

When I say coke, it refers to Coca-Cola or Pepsi depending on what the restaurant serves. Otherwise, I ask specifically for a Sprite or Dr. Pepper.

Amen! I love confusing people by asking for coke...in Dr. Pepper form.

The sad thing is now that we've been in the non-south for over 6 years, my sons are referring to soda and correcting me every time I use "Coke" instead of the "proper name"...it's heartbreaking but what can you do?
