Don't be; they proved on mythbusters that it's impossible for a cellphone to spark a fire.

If the phone that is the topic of this thread could start a fire, any open flame in the presence of gasoline fumes could do the same.

Flame and fumes = fire and explosion.

I doubt that RF (radio frequency) energy could cause a gas fire, but open flame certainly could.

But, unless we see a rash of cell phone fires, this was a fluke. Particularly since this phone wasn't in use at the time. You can't really keep people from carrying a phone ON them at a gas pump (or even in their car)

The assumed cause of cell phones sparking gas pumps is that they are in use and generate static electricity. Mythbusters completely busted this one.

Well no shit, but I was talking about a cell phone that's not on fire, aka normal, functioning phones.

That's not what the quote above said.

"Don't be; they proved on mythbusters that it's impossible for a cellphone to spark a fire."

It appears that Mythbusters was incorrect.

How about this:

A functioning cell phone will not spark a gas fire at the pump so go ahead an talk while you pump gas until the guy inside yells at you.

Seriously though, this seems to be a fluke, not like the Sony laptop batteries which was a design flaw.

I was responding to OTW who was also talking about people using functioning cell phones. How many people do you know who set their phone on fire and then talk on it?

I"ve had problems with my battery on my phone... it dies way too fast even after a full charge. One day I had it in my pocket at work and it got so hot that I could barely touch it. Kinda freaked me out because of stories like that.

I wonder if his phone had a counterfeit battery? They've been known to overheat and catch on fire.
