I wanted to see it while I was home in Charleston and wondered why there were no listings for it in the paper. When I went to look up times on Yahoo Movies yesterday that's when I found out they are not showing it in Charleston. But at least they are showing it here in Greenville so I will get to see it without traveling far.

I liked it but had a hard time taking Eddie seriously. I felt him when he had his melt down and that was it. Everytime he took the stage I saw all of his past characters wrapped up in one. From James Brown (RIP) on Saturday Night Live, remember his skit "Hot Tub", to Randy from "Sexual Chocolate"
to Donkey from Shrek, it just seemed like Eddie brought them all out and expected us to see a new character. We don't until he brings his works out.

I saw the movie today. I loved it! I agree with everyone else, Jennifer Hudson was great as Effie, her singing and acting were all on point. Beyonce was ok, which has me wondering why she's nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe when she was definitely in a supporting role. Jamie definitely had me hating him as Curtis.

Yeah, I was trying to see how Beyonce got the nomination too. The character is a supporting role and not a lead. There just isn't enough to pull best actress out I think. If anything, I give her props on holding back song wise until the end. They say it's harder to hold back than pretend you have it.

The movie in my opinion was blah. Everytime I saw Eddie Murphy perform, I could not take him seriously. He kept reminding me of all his characters in "Coming to America". I was laughing haaard! Jennifer Hudson did a wonderful job. Fabulous! Beyonce has surely come a long way, but her performance lacked personality. Her wardrobe was on point along with her makeup. Jamie Fox was wonderful, I really like him. Noni Rose, she was cute. I like her and I will continue to look out for her in upcoming films. What was Effie's brother name in the movie? He was a cutie and if that was really him singing he did a great job. I'll continue to support him as well.
I felt the storyline was rushed and I lost focus really quick because of it. If possible, I will get the dvd of the original movie.

Whatever happened to the remake of "Sparkle"? Now that was a movie!

I was thinking the same thing. He also reminded me of his Klump characters.

My mom and I saw the movie yesterday. It was good but not great.

Eddie - Ditto about the Sexual Chocolate comments! BTW, who was his character supposed to 'be' in real life? I couldn't place him.

Jamie - He plays a snake a little toooo well

Beyonce - She looked good but thats it. Her characted lacked depth. Also, I didn't like that she came off playing the victim and a goody too shoes. I didn't see the play so I am not sure if Sheryl's portrayal came off like that

Jennifer - Girl can sang! She played the heck out of that character. I was kinda mad that she lookes a hot mess in the closing scene.

I will be getting the soundtrack to this!

Keith Robinson (you might remember him from Half & Half, he was little Dee Dee's boyfriend Neil or from Fat Albert). Anyway, I loved him too, I've been a big fan since seeing him on H&H. It was quite a surprise - but a good one - to see him in the movie holding his own singing with the others.

I agree the storyline did seem a bit rushed. Especially the ending, I wish we could've found out what happened when Curtis realized Magic was his child.

I wish I could rewind back to 1982 when I could have seen this on Broadway. If Jennifer Holiday was anything (probably better or more intense) than Jennifer Hudson's performance, I would need a whole box of Kleenex.
I know this isn't the same thing as seeing it live and in person, but here's Jennifer Holiday's rendition at the 1982 Tony Awards.

I knew Ci Ci looked familiar. I just couldn't figure out where I knew him from.

my two cents....well, maybe a quarter

I just realized I haven't posted anything about my NEW FAVORITE MOVIE, so I thought I'd give my two cents (though The Little Mermaid will always be the best in my eyes!)

*LOVED JHud, but we had a debate in class over whether she really deserved an Oscar and the general concensus was "no." Seeing as how Angela Bassett didn't even win an Oscar for What's Love Got to Do With It, I don't think JHud should have gotten one for her very first movie. But I still screamed the walls down when they called her name!!

*Beyonce did just fine for what she was supposed to do. The script was written so that Effie would overshadow Deena and that's what happened--it was going to be that way no matter who played them because Deena is supposed to be quiet and bland. Besides, compared to all the other films where she's had to be "emotional" I can see GROWTH. She's always done "funny" well, but when she had to dig....well, compared to the hot mess she's done in the past, Deena was freaking Golden Globe material!

*The movie was definitely not about Beyonce, but I'm almost glad it was advertised that way. A whooooole lot of people went to see this movie because they saw Beyonce was gonna be in it. If they hadn't, not nearly as many people would have gone to see it, then the rest of the cast may not have gotten their props.

*I don't think there was a lead. Deena was not the lead, but Effie wasn't either. Neither deserved to be in the Best Actress category because the story was about 3 girls, maybe even 2, but not just 1.

*I don't buy into the whole "Why did Deena have to be light-skinned" argument. They picked B for the part, not "a light-skinned girl." Greatness (and failure) come in all colors and you can maintain that "black is beautiful" without operating on the reverse of the "brown bag rule."

*To me, Listen wasn't Deena's turning point. "Please Curtis, let me have your child" was. Maybe I just read too much into things, but when she said that, I felt like it could've easily been an overly sexed scene, but it wasn't. Deena wanted a baby--something that was fully hers that couldn't be taken away, or wrapped up in contracts and bi-laws. That made me so FURIOUS with Curtis....like JUST GIVE THAT WOMAN A BABY!!

*I wish we had seen more of Lorell. That girl was HIGH-LARIOUS, it was like watching myself...only I leave other people's husbands alone.

How did Greenville get it over Columbia It's okay though...we're going to ATL this weekend so I'll be sure to stop by Magic's movie theatre to check it out
