Rob knows his shit, but that doesn't mean he's the be-all, end-all God of music (but if your tastes really and truly suck, you deserve to be mocked).
I think centaur has it spot on -- listen to what you like but don't write it all off. Try something new for a change. (And, FWIW, I feel the same way you do about the Beatles).
The husband listens to a lot of streaming radio at his work; one of his favorite stations is 99x out of Atlanta. The stations here don't have much variety, so he gets lot of his new music from them. I have extremely eccentric tastes in music. I know some of the bands I listen to are crap, but I don't care. I listen to them anyway.
