The Current State of Rock Music
Rock music sucked for a long time. In college there was hardly any rock at all, except for student bands, who although they tried (sometimes) they usualy sucked and instead of being a good band about it and get better they blamed each other and would break up.
However, while i think music on the wholle, especially rock with all these emo pop punk wannabe bands. Seriously wtf is Blue October? That song has a violin. If they were cool, they would have had a viola. A violin is a poseur viola. Anyway, I do think some bands are good: for example, I'm digging Kasabian, and The Bravery. Actually, here is the list of cool bands besides those two right now: The Killers, Muse, Black Crowes, Franz Ferdinand, Keane, Beck, Foo Fighters. Everyone else is either broken up or on hiatus or whatever. Oh yeah, Green Day. Kurt Cobain is God. |

On the other side, I'm also really into Nine Inch Nails, Static-X, some Slipknot, Disturbed, Buckcherry. I also throw some techno in (I'm european, it's a rule that you have to like techno!). Scissor Sisters is a new pickup for me and David Hasselhoff has a new single that makes me laugh everytime I hear it. I'm about to kill The Fray, not gonna lie. And what the hell is up with U2? Those poseur sellouts just produce song after song that sounds the same. |
Music has sucked in general lately. I would love to write letters to all my local radio stations asking them to stop playing songs from that crappy excuse for a band Nickelback.

I finally got over myself in college and acknowledged that I can like whatever I want to like. Thus if I happen to like a pop song (it does happen occasionally) or a emo-esque song, it's ok. I am a big fan of Blue October but I don't try to say they're "Rock" per se.
Thus I have very eclectic tastes (and downloads) with some from the majority of the bands that you guys listed :D but also some from ones that I wouldn't have been caught dead listening to. /can't get into hiphop/rap //ok except I do like Eminem, guilty as charged. |

If you like the Bravery, you'll probably like The Faint. If you like Franz Ferdinand, you'll probably like The Futureheads. If you like Keane, you're probably a woman. If you like punk rock, the new album by the Thermals is absolutely tremendous. If you like Muse, try TV on the Radio - this is not a difficult game. Also, I don't think any of these bands fall under the category of "rock" per se. . . If you want to rock, pay the $10 and get "Boys and Girls In America" by the Hold Steady. Tell me that's not the best rock album in years . . . I realize that I'm kind of the resident semi-hipster music douche. That's fine - but it's simply awful to decry 'the state of music' like it's really any lower than any other time. In fact, fuck it - download these five tracks, and tell me 'modern music' sucks: -Califone, "The Orchids" -Monsieur Leroc, "Cooley McCoolsen" -Man Man, "Van Helsing Boombox" -Killer Mike, "That's Life" -Junior Boys, "In the Morning" Those five tracks couldn't be more different, there's literally a song from every style but country (and I have some Bright Eyes tracks for you if that's your shit). Seriously - download, enjoy, and stop. |
Killer Mike- Thats Life
----Case over, music sucks. So far people have mentioned 3 bands I like: Buckcherry, Black Crowes and The Killers. |

Buckcherry is absolutely awful, but the Crowes make up for it. |
Its genius? He's a moron who believes he's intelligent. The sad part is that he's more intelligent than his colleagues. If you want intelligent and witty rap, Outkast is the best there is.
Buckcherry is terrible, unless you like actual rock, which I do. Cocaine inspired guitar riffs=my style. |

I don't like the rap that has the annoying synthesizer sound, only talks about drinking/drugs/violence/sex, and I can't understand the words coming out of their mouths. I might get by with one of the three, but not all (which is all I hear on the radio) I don't really buy music either, or download anymore. I borrow from friends or listen to the radio. |
I've noticed there's a trend in my university's livejournal community. One person will say, 'what have you all been listening to lately?' and then it becomes a contest to see who can list the most obscure bands.
See, I don't care if you like my music or not. I like it and I listen to it. I like to stream BBC Radio One over the internet and I've discovered new music I like that way, stuff that doesn't come out over here. Also, I'm pretty into a lot of Britpop. It's just my style. Editors is one of the rockingest bands ever, Embrace is give or take but does have some good stuff, Radiohead I'm pretty meh about, same for Zeppelin but it's all about the vocals with those guys. I just don't think Thom Yorke has a great singing voice which obscures my enjoyment. Same for listening to Zeppelin. Paolo Nutini is one the new greats in my book, fun, folky and rocky with a Chris Martin-esque voice. I'll try any new music recommended to me (thank god for bittorrent) but no one should just write today's music off. There are bands today that will go down in history. There are also bands that will be forgotten. For what it's worth, I don't like the Beatles, I don't think much of them. But I do respect them for their influence on music today. EDIT: Also, I really like The Bravery, I think they're fab. I also mix it up with some Mike Doughtry and Augustana. Rock Kills Kid-not lyrically complex in any manifestation of the word, but very catchy tunes. |
The Beatles will always be the best. Case closed.

The key is to find a locally owned station. Midwest Family Broadcasting owns a bunch around here (Springfield, IL based mostly) Not only are they not bound by ClearChannel/record company rules but they also market their stations effectively. They have an excellent hard rock station, and, my favorite, one specifically aimed at women 18-35 or something. Seems to hit songs I like 85-90 percent of the time. And never ranges into the stuff I absolutely abhor. (It's not sappy music either) One of their stations also plays entire CDs late at night :)
Without that station I'm stuck flipping stations all the time. |
Mainstream rock now is God awful. How people can listen to Slipknot, Static X, NIN, etc. etc. is beyond me. I think its awful.
