When my hs daughter first went away to school, we got the family plan cellphone bill with a couple of "surprises". She honestly had no idea that there was a charge to text-message. We disabled text messaging immediately after that so there would be no further temptation...

I love text messages because I can have a quick conversation without having to be on the phone..it comes in handy in class, meetings.. etc...I have unlimited texts so thats not a problem but if its going to take more then a few minutes to resolve the issue I'd rather just talk..some of my high school clients tell me tht they text all day in class though...thats pretty sad...it was so much fun trying to get a note to a friend back in the day...these kids today are missing out...

I'm with Jill. It takes me forever to text. So I usually just answer them back and tell them to please just call me!!

I'm definitely anti-texting.

I have never sent a text message.

My best friend has sent me a few in the past- mainly saying "Please call" or the sort. But I truly know nothing about sending them.

I've recently started to use it more - generally in those situations where i need to tell someone something and i can't talk on the phone. I can send messages through my instand messenger and it saves me txt messaging charges. Although I have a family member who for years would only communicate through email - never the phone, has now switched to text messaging, i'll call him and he'll send me back a txt..... that annoys me to NO end!

I'm a text msg addict. It's a great quick way to talk to people. I'm not always at a computer to email and sometimes a phone call is too much work. I try to keep the msgs short & to the point. It's good in the city I guess because some restaurants & bars have too much noise to take a call and some don't allow the use of cell phones period.
As far as relationships & texting: I think in the beginning there should be more phone calls than texts. However, I always appreciated a short & sweet surprise text while I was dating.

One thing to worry about with excessive text messaging is getting carpal tunnel/ tendonitis. I heard it has become a lot more common in Asian countries where texting has been popular for a lot longer.
My cousin can literally hold a conversation with someone and text message at the same time. I kind of find it annoying that her fingers are moving while I'm talking... One day by noon she'd already sent 200. That would definetly put her over the 2500 mark.

I personally like to text during sorority meetings...it can be quite entertaining!

But anyway, I like to text, but only in a small amount. I normally reserve it for yes/no questions and if someone wants to start up the whole text-convo I turn off my phone.

im a texter... and i typically dont have a problem with it. i have some friends who use it ALL the time, and thats where it gets annoying. but, there are some people i rather JUST text because they are wack on the phone. these are people i dont want wasting my minutes even if it is after 9:01pm.

i do spell everything out, cause im really past the age of chatspeak. and i DEFINITELY dont use the automated message - that ish is soooooo frustrating.

Considering Mother Nature hated Hawai`i today...

When you suddenly find yourself and your neighborhood reeling from an earthquake while putting up with flash flooding and phone lines across the state were jammed left and right...

TEXT MESSAGING IS YOUR VERY BEST FRIEND.

My aunt on the Big Island taught herself how to use the feature just to let all of us know that she and the family were all okay!

I can see where in a natural disaster a text could be handy if you have limited phone reception, but texting in class or chapter meeting? If I was teaching/speaking, I'd kick you out of the meeting or confiscate the phone through the end of class. That's so rude. What could be so important that you feel the need to ignore your professor or chapter president so you can text "C U 2nite?" I hope you never do that in a business meeting!

DITTO!!! I tried to explain that to the guy at the Alltel (or as I call them AllFAIL 'cause they suck!) store & he kept repeating "You don't want to text message?" me - "No" him - "You don't want to play games?" me - "NO" him - "You don't want to have independent ring tones for up to 100 callers" me - "NO!"

I want my phone to ring so I can answer it; store contact numbers; and allow me to place phone calls... PERIOD.

Of course they don't make those simple phones so I got as basic as I could. I don't even know how to text, yet there always appears one or two 10c charges on my phone list for text messages I called to get them to disable the feature but for some reason they can't do that If I didn't have 1100 anytime minutes for $39.95/month plus unlimited nights & weekends, then I would switch. Unfortunately, nothing out there comes close to that offer (and we don't have TMobile in my area). I would switch to Verizon if nothing else b/c the hubby & all of my family are on Verizon - but for $40 a month, I think that gets me around 300 anytime minutes which isn't nearly enough. I do well to stay within my 1100 minutes
