Hmmm, I thought that he was just referring to the fact that her mom said that her nephew was just going through a phase.
For example:
Girl A: "Hey did you see Girl C's new Coach bag?"
Girl B: "Shyyyyyyt! Coach, my azz! She got that mess right down in Chinatown."
I'll have to try using it (phase) in the context noted above.
