I'm another independent who has reservations on the major parties. Sen. Clinton, IMO, is unelectable because she will be a lightning rod for the hard right and those folks will come out in droves to get back at her husband.
If the Dems have even a shot for 2008, the candidate has to be a DLC type Democrat -- people just aren't down for taxation and spending if they're feeling even a bit squeezed.
