what if someone called but you never got the message and you show up thinking they were going to offer you a bid? that would be more embarrassing i think.

At my school, PNMs were not called ahead of time. We distributed bids by having the rho chi take each member of her group aside individually and give her her bid or tell her that she didn't get one. And a bidless PNM would then have to walk out, past the other waiting PNMs, usually crying.
Same thing for invites.
